In one of my early builds I have 2 HIS oced 900mhz (default clock) 4890s in crossfire.

The rest of the rig consists of
Unknown chinese PSU 1000watt - but has worked really well
Asus p5q deluxe motherboard
4gb ocz platinum ddr2
Intel Q9650 - Oced @ 3.8ghz
H50 corsair cpu cooler.

Thinking of upgrading the GPUs for the DX11 generation. what would be the best route

1) 1 HD 5970 - but I dont think it would fit an antec 900

2) 1 gtx 480 - Hotter and maybe more power consuming than the above (esp if OCed) and very short supply - also may cost around the same - but good in tesselation

3) 1 x 2gb hd 5870 - unsure about price

4) 2 x hd 5870 - prob most expensive option (apart from SLI gtx 480)

5) 2 x hd 5850 - prob most reasonable - but future proof?

6) stick with 4890s and wait for DX11 to mature, or DX12

For now i would go with option 6 as dx11 games are not really offering much over dx9 atm. Amd should have a refreshed line-up coming soon also. If you want the change i would go for crossfire 5850's and overclock.

i'd go option 6 and wait for 5890+ you have more gpu power then me and my 4870x2 is munching throw Everything at the moment.

4890 xfire is pretty much the best of the previous gen.

unless you absolutely MUST have the latest and greatest its normally best to skip a generation (or even 2)

I'd go for option 6 as well. There are no games out there that will push anything higher than your current set-up, and none scheduled either. Crysis 2 is only going to end up as a console port, despite what EA/Crytek are saying, so even that won't be pushing anything. You could probably wait until 2011/2012 before a GPU upgrade is needed for say one game.

I up graded from the same xfire 4890s to a 5850. I upgraded just to have 1 card.

Stick with what you have for now. New ATI card by the end of the year. So current 1st gen Dx11 cards will be going on the MM.
