Upgrade from 5850 to a 480

However stupid you guys think I am, I've ordered the 480. The price is too good and my theoretical performance increase is enough to justify it for me.

Appreciate everyone's input.

If anybody has got a 21.5" 1080p monitor, you mind telling me what you have and what you think of it? Cheers.
Nobody is saying it's stupid to get the GTX480...people are just saying you won't really get performance increase at that 720p, thus it is a waste. It is sensible to get the GTX480, as long as you would upgrade you monitor.

Upgrading from a 1280x1024 to 1920x1080 the most signicficiant improvement would be the aspect ration. With 4:3 you have a much narrower field of view when playing FPS games comparing to 16:9. I went from 16:10 (20") to 16:9 (21.5")...even that was a noticable improvement, and watching HD movies no longer has a black border at top and bottom. If you want a HD movie on your 17" monitor, the actual output of the video playback would probably be just 15.6" or something like that ignoring the black borders at top and bottom.

That may be another reason why I wasn't bothered, I don't watch movies at all.
19", by the way. And people are pretty much telling me that it's stupid. :P Thanks though.

Gaming on a 19" 4.3 monitor when you can get a 24" full HD monitor for just over 100 quid is stupid.

Wanting the best IQ on a 19" 4.3 screen is a paradox :p

i can play at 1920 fine on your current card fine and your worried about your res

like easy said no difference at that res and throwing money away buy a decent bigger monitor

Yeah, I gamed at 2560x1440 on an overclocked 5850 and it coped with most games in full details just fine.

Also, does anybody think they can run through what's best to remove an ATI card & drivers and install an Nvidia card & drivers?

Use the ATI/AMD installer to unintstall the drivers, reboot, CCleaner registry, install Nvidia drivers, reboot and you're done.

Update PhysX and make sure to get rid of Catalyst Application Profiles if you installed them. Might be worth reinstalling DirectX too.

Windows 7 will cope with the rest. In fact you could simply swap the cards and it should work straight away.

Just downgrade your monitor to something like 800x600 - not only will your FPS actually increase as you wish, but you'll probably *make* money from selling your current one! Win win!

A new monitor is on the list next. By the sound of everyone's opinion, I've been missing out. Guess it's time to try and earn some money.

No one is saying you are stupid mate, what we are saying is go for the 480 but update the monitor too or it's a waste of GPU power and you wont enjoy the benefits of such a card that was designed to be used on a full HD screen at the minimum and even higher resolutions.

Enjoy your new card mate and sell the 5850 and your current monitor to fund a new 1920 x1080 or 1920 x 1200 monitor. You will thank us all in the end and you will see why when you get the new monitor ;):D.

BF3 apparently utilizes all the cpu cores, so it will not be just the gpu and the monitor. It would be nice for you to post your specs so we can advise you accordingly. My personal opinion is for you to get another 5850 for crossfire if upgrading your gpu is your utmost concern. I am running 5850's myself and I can play everything maxed out with no trouble whatsoever and I game on a 27" monitor (1920x1080).

do people really not read threads before posting? first page dude, there on the first page. there also quoted for clarity a few posts down too!

Maxing out isn't the problem. I'm fussy and I wish to maintain a solid 60fps.

Spec is now in sig.

Fair enough buddy, I suppose you do need a gpu after selling it and the 480 is a good choice until the 7000 and 600 series come out. You have a great spec and at 4ghz it is more than enough for games at your resolution. Your next upgrade should be a decent 120hz monitor it makes everything so smooth especially in fps games! Don't mistake us for pressuring you. We are simply trying to help you with the best decision, end of the day it is your money and your choice. I am glad you've made your decision and is happy about it.

For removing the ati drivers use the ati catalist intsaller and select uninstall, reboot and use cccleaner to remove any left over traces in the registry.

Alright, cheers.

Are 120Hz monitors much more expensive then regular monitors?

It depends, they are usually £200-£300 mark depending on make and size. You should check out the Asus, LG and BenQ in the 20-24in category. Personally I am using the Samsung SA9505D which I paid £550 for, but for me that was a worthwhile investment as I spend a fair amount of time on it and I enjoy my fps games.
