Upgrade from 6700k to 11400 would you ?

I currently have Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 3000 MHz C15 XMP 2.0 in my i7-6700k system.

If I upgraded to 11400 and a B560 motherboard (or something similar) would I be able to use that memory? If I can would it be noticably slower than using newer memory?

Cheers

I guess that is the reason i keep holding of upgrading my cpu as it doesnt seem worth it unless you spend big bucks (and still will be only minimal difference)

If you play AAA titles 6 cores is going to help , your probablly going to get between 10 to 20% uplift in gaming going to a 11400 regardless.

Then theres pcie4 which can boost gpu fps by 3 to 10 % depending on game.

Selling your old stuff will offset the cost.

How is your pc performing now , fps ?

I'm using a widescreen X34 Predator 3440x1440 and mostly I'm getting my 100fps (which is monitor refresh) Cyberpunk drops a bit, but im holding off playing that until its better patched.

I was thinking of the upgrade as what you said - it should be minimal cost if i get a decent price for my 6700k and motherboard and keep my memory. (seen 6700k selling for around £130 and mobo £70 on ebay - not sure i would get that though)

Would i still be able to use my Noctua NH-D14 or would i have to get another cpu hs/fan?

Yes definately reuse your Nochtua should fit as socket spacing is the same. I would check out the members market rather than ebay

That's great I like that hs/fan combo :)

Would there be any noticeable improvements from 6700k -> 11400 at 3440x1440?

As the B560 motherboard is about 4 years newer - would that offer any improvements to my Asus Max VIII Hero?

Would I notice any improvements in boot up times / game load speeds / responsiveness etc

My system has been rock solid for all these years with a nice OC and I just want to feel do i need to upgrade or not haha

Can someone explain why using a i5-11400 which has

base clock 2.6Ghz and boost 4.4GHz

would be better than my i7-6700k which has

base clock 4Ghz and boost 4.5Ghz (OC)

(well apart from the extra 2 Cores and 4 threads :D - I thought most games are CPU limited to 1 core? )

Its dependent on TDP and cooling. The lower figure is for multicore AVX benchmarks, when it is configured at a 65W TDP with the stock cooler.

However,if you have a better cooler, and raise the TDP limit from say 65W to 95W,then it will boost much higher than the 2.6GHZ minimum clockspeed. Stuff such as gaming also will usually have higher clockspeeds anyway as its less demanding.

So this is kinda like overclocking but using the TDP? I am more concerned ingame performance.

Also I have been recommended the B560 and H570 motherboards - whats the difference? Which is better?

basically you use at full power get 4.4ghz. you will need a different cooler other than the stock one for this. you dont need a expensive one just one better than stock.

I have a Noctua NH-D14 which has dual coolers on which should be okay

I'm confident we'll see a Ryzen 5600 (non-X) in the very near future as AMD aren't going to want to leave Intel with the goto mainstream price/performance CPU in the i5-11400 for long.

Back on topic for the OP looking at a few geekbench benchmarks I'd agree that the 11400 doesn't seem much faster then the 6700k you already have? Maybe only around 20% faster in single core and 30% multi core. I can't imagine that would make much difference in any game or most productivity apps?

Would be interested to hear from anyone who's made a similar upgrade and whether they felt it was worth it? My personal experience with upgrades is that unless you can gain at least a 50-100% improvement then it's not worth making a change unless it's needed for a specific app/game or task.

I know that itch to upgrade, especially when your kit is 5 years old, but I think as others have suggested you'd need to buy something faster than an i5-11400 to be meaningfully better then what you have.

yeah me too

Still wondering which mobo is better the H570 vs the B560 (for gaming)? They both have just been released i think? I cant see why you would chose one over another?

Do all B560 and H570 motherboards allow changing the TDP limit with 11400F cpu?

Is it easy to do?

I recently got a Core i5 10400 and a B460 mini-ITX motherboard for not too much, and I can configure TDP in the BIOS,especially for short term boosts. It did make a difference. Also look at the review I linked in post 13 - the reviewer basically increased the TDP,used a better CPU cooler and the CPU boosts much higher as a result.

Yeah it looks good but wondering if all motherboards allow this?

Going rate for a 6700K is ~£120-160 on the auction site, the same combo board CPU just sold for £200, and £191, and like I said o the first page and first person to suggest selling it, do so with the RAM you'll get £220-270. No point in keeping the RAM if it is old DDR4, you can get decent Crucial Ballistix 3200MHz for £65 which is Micron E-die and will go to 4000MHz without breaking a sweat.
Other option is to sell it as a system, buy a cheap £35 RGB case, £30 PSU, and £25 240GB SSD, and you'll get £350 for it on FB or one of the other ads pages.

Is this the memory you were mentioning?

Crucial Ballistix BL2K16G32C16U4B 3200 MHz, DDR4
