Upgrade from 6850

I have a friend,he is using an old i3 dual core,overclocked to4.2,with a 6850,he is wanting to upgrade his gpu ,what is the best card to go for ,that won't bottleneck his cpu,he plays a lot of wow and lol.?He also has 4gb ram,windows 7.

I'm not so knowledgable about the i3's, though I thought with some you could unlock two extra cores? Anyway, quite a few of the modern cards could be bottlenecked by his cpu in some situations / games. That aside, I would think a 7850 2gb should do him quite nicely.

Thanks ,yes I thought that was probably going to be as far as it would be worth going,do you think he would see a decent improvement in games?

In some, there'll be reasonable gains, while in others I think he'll see a substantial improvement.

ive run a 7850 with an i3 540,even at stock cpu speeds it handled games fine at 1920x1080,im running 8gb of ram though so that would help things,plus you need a 64 bit operating system as 32bit can only use 3.5gb of memory

That's good to know,yes maybe upgrading ram is a good idea too,it's pretty cheap at the moment,if you change the ram do you have to redo the overclock,as it was an overclockers system?

you would need more qpi/vtt or memory controller voltage,im using 1.3-1.32v with 8gb at 1600mhz,it tends to be abit jerky/jittery with 4gb of ram,games like l.a.noire was,with 8gb its smooth

just take a pic of each bios setting/page before you add in the ram,then you wont lose your settings

An i3 running at 4.2GHz is probably faster than an i5 running at stock so the CPU won't be a bottleneck.
