As i know that i will be getting a fair bit of cash for christmas i have decided to splash out on a new graphics card. I only want to spend around £150 so i'm looking at the 9800GT/GTX. Any recommendations from anyone?

Presently i have a Gainward 7800 'goes like hell' edition

Go for ATi's Radeon 4850 or for Radeon 4870.

4850 offers the best bang for you money.

Its also better than 9800GTX and 9800GTX+., 4870 512 is better than the original GTX 260, while 4870 1GB is tied up with GTX 260-216

I was under the impression that the 9800GTX+ was faster than the 4850, esp after the 180.48 drivers..

Also a 260-216 is a fair bit faster than a 4870 nowadays.

4850 is great VFM though.

I have no experience of the recent ATI cards but I went from a 7800GT to a 260-216 (Zoltac) last week and am very impressed so far. Cool and quiet and powerful, also clocks very well. Slightly over your budget at present though.

That's only half true - only when comparing stock for stock and even less so with the 180.48 drivers now. I can guarantee you theres no 4870 512MB with stock air cooling that can OC enough to beat my 260 at its 710/1484/1250 clocks. 260 is fantastic OCer!

For £150 either a 4850 or 9800gtx+ as any cards above those would cost around £200. Would recommend the 4850 as they are currently cheaper and only a gtx+ can match them. Any other 9800 and I think they are slower.

I also had a 7800GT, I upgraded to a 8800GTX OC and there is a huge difference! I picked mine up from MM for £75 so if I was you, I would consider buying second hand, just keep an eye on MM I'm sure you can pick up an excellent card for your budget.

edit: Just noticed you cannot access MM yet

I really am in two minds in what to get. the 4850's look good on paper but are ugly as sin plus only seem to need one 6 pin pci-e connector, whereas most games are enhanced for nvidia it looks nicer but it does seem to need more power.

that's resolution dependent. If you're gaming over 1680x1050, then I'd say it might be worth the extra £25. If you're at 1680 or below, then the 512MB versions are fine :)
