Upgrade from 7900 GTO?

Would it be worth it to step up to an 8800 from my current 7900 GTO?

Rest of the machine is fairly up to date (E6600 core duo, 2 gig ram).

Frame rates in STALKER + TDU ( @ 1680x1050) aren't bad - just they're not as smooth as I'd like.

Or should I wait for something to come later in the year?

I upgraded from a 7900gt @ gto speeds to a 8800gts640. HUUUUGE boost in performance.

An 8800GTX would be an even larger boost in performance.

The 7900 GTO is slow compared to a 8800 GPU by a significant ammount.

I currently have a 8800 GTS 320mb and I'm getting 8800 GTX performance when clocked 650/2000

Not long, 8800's are over 5 months old already, R600's are 23-24th this month, 8800 Ultra (which is faster than the GTX) is due along with Nvidia's mid-range cards which are supposedly 15 days away, and who knows about the 8900's, rumour was supposedly they are due around R600 time, and rumour saying supposedly been canned as Nvidia are going straight to G90 (so basically no one knows), but id hold of a few weeks yet, i think the 8800 Ultra will be the one to spoil ATi's R600 party, so the next best thing is only about 2x weeks away.

When, 5-6 months ago, they could be found for £150 they were superb value. If you could still find them at that price they wouldn't be too bad, but given their current position, they aren't even worth looking at.

If you're running your 7900gto at stock then any 8800 card will blow it away at any resolution. If you can get your memory up to 1600-1800 though and your core around 700, (which a lot of people found quite acheivable) then I might be tempted to wait a bit until something slightly better became available for around the £200 mark. Something with at least as much vram.
