Upgrade from 7950

Normally, I would say yes, but recently I've read a few posts on here which seem to have created some doubt in my mind.

I'm still inclined to think it's worth doing, but until I'm sure of my facts then I can't be more assertive on the matter (unless I misinterpreted what I read some days/weeks back anyway :D).

FWIW: when I used to run a 1200p 60hz screen with my current card, I could definitely see the difference between...say...30fps and 80fps, regardless of the refresh rate.

have you clocked the balls off the 7950 yet? Cos my, do they like to overclock

Your call. 480 is a decent upgrade, but 1080p(ish) @ 60hz is due an upgrade too soon. You could go either way with the first upgrade really.

7950 to 480 your looking about a 50% performance boost in games.

That is a good boost!

Yes I have massively overclocked the card so managing to play BF1 on high albeit with a few tweaks on some settings :)

I think I will go card first as it's the cheapest option then I will have to decide on a monitor and it looks a bit of a minefield with all the g syncs, freesync, 4 k blah blah blah!

Any ideas on a good upgrade on the current monitor for not a big expense?

Depends on what you mean by "not a big expense". :)

If you go ahead with the purchase of an RX 480 then a Freesync screen would seem logical. Here are examples that would match that card quite well:

I was thinking of £500 or less really and possibly 27" so a couple of good choices there by the look of it. Looking back at my monitor at present this was roughly £450-500 back in 2006. Deffo time for an upgrade but it's done well :)
