Hi,
I'm just wondering how much benefit I will see going from the above to the new GPU, as the 7970 runs 1200mhz core. The reason I would like to no is I am going to build a new system this Christmas with Haswell etc. and looking for a new GPU for that or stick with what I have got. Also I'm not looking to go Xfire want single GPU solution, will also be waiting for non reference coolers which will hopefully be with us before Xmas.

Any advice and help would be appreciated. Cheers

For a single gpu setup your current processor would be fine.

I would upgrade just the graphics card and you will probably find that the performance you get with your current setup is good enough.

At 1080p though your 7970 is probably doing a very good job as it stands.

Fancying a change though so you definitely don't think there's a benefit to Haswell and 290x or 780ti?

The only Haswell processor worth upgrading too from what you already have is the 4770K and I not sure that the performance increase is worth spending that extra money for.

Your overclocked i7 930 with a 290x or 780 would give you very good performance.

I would skimp on getting a haswell system. Even on a early i7 like your one is very capable overclocked. In most games you will not have a visible difference in fps. Now when Intel release true 8 core CPU's to the mainstream market we'll be talking. You'll use less power with the newer CPU's though.

Tasks complete faster with my 2700k but my overall system felt more responsive with my i7 920 at 4Ghz for some reason.

Been reading some more and agree seems Haswell isn't worth it from what I have as I mainly game. Maybe chuck in some extra ram to 12gb and go non reference 290x or 780ti just would like to no what the performance increase could be from a 1200mhz 7970 in %.

Stick with your 7970, Unless it has suddenly stopped working there is no reason to get anything else, If you really want more performance, Get another 7970.

7970 is still a great card but is it failing to produce the results you want? If so the 290 or 780ti will both give better performance and then it is just a matter of cost and how much money your willing too spend

Not interested in Xfire looking for the fastest single GPU solution. Also thinking mantle aswell how good will that be is the question nobody knows yet.

As you're only gaming and not benching it may be worth looking at the 290 pro or regular 780, both are somewhere in the region of 30%+ quicker then the 7970 you have and both will match their respective 290x/ti variants when overclocked.

That said, if you're at 1080 60hz the only game thats going to stop that fully maxed out is crysis 3, and given a pair of 780's at that res struggle maxed out you have little to worry about.

My advise is keep the 7970 at least until mantle is out, that way you can at least try it out without spending any money, then make your decision from that.

Hard to say.
haswell with an ssd boot fast and have ipc procentage over that system.
for overall pc usage the computer will be more snappy.

290x or a 780 but that 7970 at current resolution is so good, you be hard pressed IMO to take note of difference.
Mantle might alter that for the games but we know more in a few days.

Got itch for a new card though leaning towards a non reference 290x at the mo. Im finding the 7970 aint holding up at max settings on battlefield 4 some big dips here and there. And also more recently the new splinter cell wasnt consistently smooth either

My 7870 maxed out BF3 no problems. Is 4 that different? I'd of thought my 7970 could handle it easily enough, for the price you can get a second hand 7970 for I'd go down that route.

My 680 could max out BF3 at 1920x1080, it wont for BF4. Had to notch down to MSAA 2x and High (Low Terrain Decoration)

I can max BF3 no problems at my 1200p res around 70-80fps, not with BF4 and other recent games even at 1200 on the core getting dips to high 30`s to low 40`s when a bit happening or certain lighting. Splinter cell blacklist had similar problems at times when maxed.

780 ti is obviously a beast of a choice and so is the 290x (as long as you wait for a non reference)

But for the price of a 780ti would it not be possible to get two 290's in crossfire with just abit of extra ££? (once again rpoviding you wait for non reference) It's worth giving a thought.

But the best performance-price option is to just crossfire your 7970 with another 7970 or a 280x. You'd be paying at least £220-£280 depending on what you choose and you'll get a nice performance boost.

Just a note if you intend on playing bf4, I currently have the 7970 matrix platinum overclocked to 1200mhzcore/1700mhz mem and it max's bf4 on 1920x1080. Have experience no issues with my gpu on bf4 so far.

Edit: Personally I myself will be getting a 290 or 290x (non reference of course xD)
I can't crossfire with my setup as the matrix platinum takes 3 slots and I have a soundcard so room :(

What kind of Min/Avg/Max FPS are you seeing? And when you say max do you mean 4x MSAA and HBAO?

Mine can sit at 60 fps most of the time maxed including 4x msaa and hbao but does have quite a few dips to 30`s and 40`s and thats singleplayer. Carnt see it been cpu thats at nearly 4ghz i7 and 6gb ram i think is enough.
