Hi guys,

I have recently upgraded my machine (spec in signature) except the gpu. As more and more games are requiring more Vram, do you think i should upgrade from 7970 ghz. I can max out most games at 1080p but not with MSAA/supersampling.

If i can benefit from a boost, which card would you suggest to be the best bang for buck in terms of performance increase?

THanks in advance

Hi,
It depends really if you want AMD or Nvidia.

If AMD, 290/290X should be alright, some of them offer 8GB of vRAM if I remember correctly.
If Nvidia, then GTX 780Ti or 980 would be best choice. Or go super crazy and buy Titan/Titan Z :P

i went from my 7950 oc to 7970 speeds. a 970 is basically twice as fast. a 290 is a little slower a 290x its down to the games.

AMD has better image quality Nvidia has a smoother feel to it.

I would very much like to go down the nvidia route this time. I haven't owned an nvidia card since the mighty 8800gtx.

What about 970? is it better than 780 ti? and is cheaper?

i went for gigabyte 1 overclocks to match a stock 980gtx n stck voltage 60c in game silent. it is long though.

out of the 970s i loked at there were 3 i got it down to.

1. Msi 970 (maybe dodgy fans though) but great oc
2. asus strixx great cards not good for rma
3. gigabyte g1.

think its a toss of a coin but .. if you see many recent benchmarks and with driver increases at 1080 the 970 beats the ti most of the time. at higher res the 780 ti can have the edge.

A 970 twice as fast as a 7970, got any benchmarks?

i have benched them myself many games and its a big leap

thats stock now i have it oc id expect at least 5-10 fps more.

As I thought it would be, no way is a 970 twice as fast. The 290x was only around 35% fast on release and the 970 is pretty much on par with that

look at what i posted they arnt 30 percent different in some games it maybe but in many others its close to 50 percent avg.

a 7950 is half as fast as a 780ti.
a 970 gtx is nigh on exactly the same as a 780ti.

i benched abut 20 games that are modern.

most decent 970gtx will oc to a 980 also.

remember i benched at 1080. some of those benchmarks are for higher res. which makes a big difference.

Thanks guys, was moving into a new flat and all so could not reply sooner.

I have the GhZ edition and to be honest i have cranked up farcy 4 and assassin's creed unity (2xMSAA) and i don't see much of a slowdown. I guess i just had the upgrade bug, i am hoping the new string of cards (whenever they arrive) will warrant an upgrade to the 7970, which i am happy to say is still a beast :D

Yeah, I'm a similar sort of situation. There have been several occasions where I was hovering over the buy button when considering the GTX970 range, but for 1200p I still find my 7970 does me well.
