Was looking to upgrade from my 8350. rest of my specs -

8350 @4.8ghz
16GB DDR3
980TI.
gigabyte 990fxa-ud3

I play a huge range of games, but I don't like how the single core performance is, selling my 8350 and motherboard will net around 150-160 I think

Would Devil Canyon be a worthy upgrade? There is a bundle for £280 on OC, I want to SLI in a year or so when pascal is out.

Budget £300

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, my 8350 is starting to show its age.

It will be a nice upgrade over 8350. It will give you boost in gaming performance as fewer stronger cores. Especialy if you were to over clock either I5 4690k or I7 4790k to 4.5 or more. Just note I7 would be better for SLI as more threads and also more likely to oc higher. Either way i5 or i7 it will be a good upgrade

Thanks for the reply.

Would there really be many issues with having less threads for SLI? What bundle would you recommend? if you could check that would be great.

They both have 16 pci-e lanes so for sli shouldn't be much difference. There are few games that use extra thread of I7 so around 2-4fps increase. If you are rendering or live streaming I7 will give boost in video rendering around 15-25% depending on software used. Also in streaming better fps around same percentage 15-20%.

This deal with I7 will be nice. Although £350 but you can get free upgrade with new motherboard for 3 years from initial purchase date

Here is link to the bundle

Here it's good i5 bundle or you can buy mobo and cpu seperatly in which case you get better motherboard but it cost £11 over your budget

Hope this helps. Also you can reuse your 16gb ram :P Any question please ask

The bundle looks great - What would the gigabyte z97x be like for overclocking? is it worth going for the TUF?

Micky - can't see the skylake in what you linked! Would it be worth it going from ddr3 to ddr4 for the extra cost?

Which gigabyte z97x? Z97x-sli has 4 power phase so no heavy over clock where as Z97x UD3H-BK (£350 bundle with I7) has 8 power phase so higher oc can be reached. Overall Z97x UD3H-BK is better motherboard.

To be honest no need for skylake as its more expensive and and for example if you were to go for I7 skylake you might aswell go for x99 platform as difference is minimal + you get 6 core cpu.

Question about DDR4, no really as DDR4 will cost you around £110 for 16gb and you already have 16gb or ram. What ram is it anyway?

Also there is mistake wioth 2nd bundle with ram as motherboard supports ddr3 and he put ddr4 so I think he got wrong link to the bundle.

Hi, i myself had a AMD 8350, and went to a I7 6700k , it was big difference in games, for example i used to get dips to 40fps on GTA 5 now i dont get that dip in frames i did before and is pleasure to play, i think any i5 would be an improvement over the 8350 ,

ram prices between ddr3 and ddr4 aint much difference, but if you wanted to keep the ddr3 you have, you could get the devils canyon

I've decided to go for the I5 4690K and the MSI Z97-GAMING 5 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard

Good mix? Paired with a 980ti and another 980ti in a year or so.

If I wanted to upgrade CPU in future, is the motherboard a good choice?

SLi 980Ti would be bottlenecked like crazy with an I5 i'd imagine, were it me, i'd push for a Skylake I5 build and a single 980Ti, Enjoy that for a while, then when it comes to upgrading with another 980Ti, Go with an I7 at the same time.
