Hi all, it's been a while since I've messed around with my desktop. I've been wondering about changing my GPU as I feel like I'm missing out on all the latest effects in the games I've been playing.

Current setup is:
  1. Quad core 2.4 ([email protected] at times)
  2. Asus Maximus motherboard
  3. 8GB DDR2
  4. 64bit OS
  5. Golden Sample 8800GT 1024GB

I really don't understand the new plethora of model names over the past few years and what would give me similar performance to what I have now. I can play the latest games like Black Ops and the like on relatively full settings, but I suppose I'm missing on the latest effects.

Any ideas or should I just be happy with what I have for now and wait a little longer. If I'll see no major increase in visual effects I wouldn't want to bother with it.

Thanks

I'd probably recommend getting a 7850 2Gb, best value for the money I'd say- especially when considering the overclocking headroom. It'll be much faster than your 8800GT as well. If you are completely happy with what you have atm, then by all means wait, but if you want to upgrade then a 7850 2Gb is what I'd get (anything faster would probably be held back by your CPU).

Jut upgraded the father in law from a gts 250 to a 480, roughly the same bump your looking at to a 7850.

Bottom line your looking at being able to up the settings dramatically in all games, but unless you turn them up to full you wont notice the difference. IMHO you have waited long enough for it to be worth the upgrade.

You can get a B-grade 6850 for £70 if you're ok with that. If not a 7770 is under £100. They're a huge upgrade over an 8800GT but shouldn't be handicapped by the CPU.
