Hi I am Just wondering whats maximum limit i could push my current system without bottlenecking

I have a AMD 6000 Dual core with 4gb budget kingston ram, on a abit kn9s, using a ati 2900xt, with a ocz 700w psu connected to a 32inch lcd tv and 17" lcd monitor and was wondering would a upgrade to a gtx 295 work as just got the idea if gonna upgrade might as well go for the best, if not any ideas what best options to go for within the gtx range

Also I have been trying to find out if my motherboard is pci express 1.0 or 2.0 i no me 2900 is, but cant find out anything it just says pci x16 my motherboard is abit kn9s
If it is would this limit my upgradability without changing my motherboard

Any comments would be gladly received, as am new to using forums

Well I'd think that your psu could handle the more powerful cards, but your cpu would really really hold back the modern cards and using a 32-inch (usually around 1440x900 I think) and a 17 inch, something like a gtx285 would be crazy madness overkill.

I think if you just want to upgrade the card then a 4850 or 9800gtx would be as high as you should go but you should also consider a full upgrade.
For the price of a gtx285 you could easily pick up a descent cpu/mobo and vid card.

I think your slightly underestimating his system... it isn't the best no but it's not as bad as you make out, but I do think you should look at a 280 not the 295, it'll be huge leaps over what you have now with less cost.

yeah I didnt mean to imply that it is a weak system, just that if he would actually consider forking out so much for a top of the line vid card then why not look at the rest of his system.

I have decided to try the nvidia route as had quite few ati over the years also if my motherboard is pci 1.0 am guessing this would affect it and i cant seem to find out even from the manual or website it is a abit kn9s and i had it less than 2 years

Yeah I couldnt find anything about your mobo, if you download gpu-z look under 'bus interface' it should say pci 1.0 or 2.0.

If you just want vid card and like nvidia, you can pick up 9800gtx+ for about £135.

Just don't get a 295, they've proven them selves to be utterly pointless. They're too expensive and don't offer much if anything more than a 4870X2.

If you want a new card, don't even bother with a GTX280. Look at the 4870s and the GTX260s. A 4870 is slightly faster than a GTX260 though.

I have tried that tool all it shows under bus interface is pci express x16 @16, if it is only a 1.0 would that mean any mainly higher cards ie 260s upwards would not perform well

Not 100%, I dont think they would perform badly but perhaps they might be slightly limited, more so as the strength of the card goes up.

At a guess they would perform about 90-95% compared to being used on a pci.2 board. (NOT SURE ABOUT THAT)

What would be the difference in memory on cards ie between 512mb and 1gb does it really make much difference at all also the same we the processor cores i now looking at 9800s and 260s i been looking at the XFX GF GTX 260 Black Edition DDR3 PCIE 2XDVI 666/2.3GHz for £225 at **** and the OcUK GeForce 9800 GT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (XNE/9800TXT352-PM8592) for £92 which seems good price

It depends on the card we are talking about. 1GB on an 8800GT is not really all that exciting. 1GB on a 4870 is a big step up over 512MB if you game with AA at high res.

The 9800GT you list is pretty good, but it can't touch the 260.

I think with memory it relates to resolution, so the more memory the better performance will scale relative to increased monitor size.

I dont know much about the 9800gt cards, a 260 is in a completely different league it is far more powerful.

I think that if you want to have descent gaming a year or two into the future or you might get a bigger monitor then you really want at least a 9800gtx+.

I'm presuming your telly has a native resolution of 1360x768 unless it's a very new model? If this is the case you'd be as well to get the cheap 9800GT as a 260 is a tad overkill for that res. The 9800GT is basically a rebadged 8800GT and will perform admirably at that resolution. Put the money you save towards a new board + CPU later on down the line perhaps.

i disagree the gtx295 is not pointless, but it would be uber overkill on OP set up. a 1gb 4870 or gtx/260/280 will be fine and will be good enough if u upgrade cpu/mobo later down the line
