After finding out my dads deciding to buy my 12 year old sister a laptop for xmas.. i decided he can get me a new gfx card seeing as hes splashing the cash. need help before they buy next week deciding though.

im split between a gtx460 or an hd 6850. both roughly £135-140. which is better?.. mainly used for gaming :) be nice to finally see metro 2033 in dx11.. as im currently using dx9 -.- thanks for any help :p:)
 
GTX 460, you can use the physx option in metro with it. ;) The 460 and 6850 are about on par performance wise, so it basically comes down to what features that may interest you, 460 has physx, a well developed and supported 3D solution and cuda, the 6850 has eyefinity and not so well established 3D options.

Hmm, if at all possible, get a 6870, 5870 or a GTX 470, other wise at that price probably the GTX 460 1gb of course ;)

If its Nvidia optimised games such as Metro you want to play stick with an Nvidia card, a 460 or 470.

However I had a very good experience playing the game with my 5870.

Everything on max except for 'depth of field' and 'msaa'

tried this ;) sadly he wouldnt let me drive around in his car all day delivering building materials :rolleyes:

and ive been after a 460 for a while thought it'd be a decent enough upgrade but since the new 68**s came out didnt know whether they'd be better or not.. il have a scour and see if i can find a possible 470 on the cheap otherwise may well be a 1gb 460!
 
Il be honest I've gone for the £129.99 Asus 768mb gtx460 on offer at £111.. It's a Christmas gift from my parents who aren't overly blessed with money so instead of spending the £160 on a top grade one Ive told them to keep the extra £40/50 and either treat themselves or put it towards someone else. I'm happy with it anyway but thanks guys :-) merry Xmas too all!
 
i use a 470gtx, a 460 would likely struggle slightly, mine maxxes everything out fairly well, but i turn of dof, or tesselation, the difference is minimal, but as far as fps is concerned it goes up by 70%
 
cheers guys, didnt think there was a need for me to be greedy, presents a present im grateful for whatever i got (even a lump of coal ;)) another question, is there going to be a notable difference between the cards?.. the gtx260 im using atm is the old 192 edition one so it seems a pretty good change?
