I have a i5 2500k and a 6950 and GPU. I've not got into 3d rendering programs and videl editing and feel its showing its age (although its only about 4 years old)

I have about £1000 saved.... Maybe £1200. Would it be worth upgrading to x99 (5930k) with a new mobo GPU and ram? I have everything else such as cooler, case, is keyboard etc

Have you overclocked your 2500k? Can get some further performance out of that chip.

Are you able to use your rendering programs to make use of a GPU rather than CPU? Might make sense to upgrade to a beefy GPU.

If you want to spend the money, then go for it. But as said, with a £60 cooler, you'll get that 2500k up to 4.4 no bother, giving you a massive 33% overclock.

Oh and, although it won't really benefit 3D rendering (I assumed you meant "now" instead of "not"), if you don't already have a good SSD, GET ONE! :D

Oops.... Yes I meant now into 3d rendering and video editing. I Should check my spelling. In my phone.

I already have a SSD.... Its a corsair force 3. I have had problems with this drive a lot in the past and would like a more reliable one.

I have an antech kuhler 920 ( I think that's the model). I've not overclocked my CPU. I tried a few years ago when I built it and kept getting bsod. I also had a automatic over clock button om y mobo and that still bsod it so I have never bothered.

Maybe just a decent GPU, better SSD and more ram would be a good upgrade then? How are the 970's compared to a and 6950. I deffo wanna make the switch to nvidia

I wouldn't bother upgrading to be honest. The difference between the 2500k and the new generation is something like 25% which to be honest isn't worth it.

Get a decent air or water cooler and overclock that chip. I'm running mine at 4.5ghz (1.25v) and its 25-28idle and 60-62c load under a H100i and it takes everything I throw at it.

I have recently upgraded my i5 2500k system with a MSi 970 and a Samung Evo 250Gb SDD and it has made a massive difference! Have had my processor overclocked to 4.5Ghz since I built the system in 2011, with no problems.

What is the full spec of the system you currently have the 2500k system ? Motherboard, ram, etc. because by the sounds of it you are wasting money on a new system and should just update the graphics card and sort out overclocking the system correctly or finding out what is causing the BSOD when you overclock.

Just buy a R9 290 or GTX 970 and get a decent cooler and overclock the 2500k, then add in a SSD and it will feel new :)

If you got more money then get a GTX 980.
