I've been out of the loop for quite some time when it comes to PC Hardware etc..

I want to start upgrading my PC, transitioning from 1080p to 1440p.

I currently have a 3570k which I've had for 5years now, paired with a 970gtx.

Which CPU do you recommend I upgrade to? or is it worth waiting for specific releases?

Exactly the setup I had.

Previous: 3570k, 970, 16Gb ram 1200p monitor

New: Ryzen 1700, 970, 16Gb ram 1200p monitor

I am waiting for Vega before I upgrade GPU and monitor.

Your choices are Ryzen 1600 and up or a 7700k, gpu side wait for Vega and then either get one of those or a 1070/1080 once princes drop a bit.

Gaming-wise, if you plan upgrading to a new i5 then that's a waste of money, R5 1600/R5 1600X makes more sense. If you plan upgrading to a new i7, again, R7 1700/R7 1700X makes more sense as at 1440p the gap between i7-7700K and R7 1700 narrows.
If you plan using your PC not only for gaming but for other stuff too, then going Ryzen is a no-brainer in my opinion and I wouldn't even contemplate going Intel.

Will a R5 1600, paired with a new GPU, once Vega is released or a 1080 be sufficient for 1440p gaming? or will I require a 1700 for 1440p?

There is no difference between 1600 and 1700 in gaming performance as both can be overclocked to +/- 3.9 GHz and only a handful of games can utilise more than four threads anyway, so no, you won't require 1700 over 1600.

When it comes to Ryzen bottlenecking your new graphics card, have a look here: http://www.legitreviews.com/cpu-bot...ed-on-amd-ryzen-versus-intel-kaby-lake_192585
Both GTX 1080 and GTX 1080 Ti are tested on i7-7700K and Ryzen and while Ryzen is slower, by looking at the framerates it is clear that you will be able to play games without any issues nevertheless.

I decided to stick with my 3570k - and overclock it - coupled with a 980Ti it handles everything at 1440p just great. Maybe next year...

If you're not wanting to OC then its more of an upgrade. Personally I felt it wasn't worth the outlay for the small gains as a fairly casual gamer. For the record, I only get to 4.3Ghz as I didn't do well in the silicon lottery!

Is your upgrade itch really needs a scratch, then the 1600 is the gaming CPU to get, theres only a handful of games that like the 1700 over it, but not by much. Honestly I would just keep your CPU, throw your money at where gaming really needs it, a GPU or monitor
