Mate of mine is considering upgrading to Z97 and here is his current spec:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700
Motherboard: Asrock P45DE
Memory: 8GB Corsair XMS2 TWin2x4096-8500c5 G
Graphics Card: HIS ATI Radeon HD 6950 2048MB GDDR5

I've recommended the following with the aim to source a 290 and 8GB Ram from the MM:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £189.95
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £103.99
1 x Corsair Hydro H80i High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler £74.99
Total : £378.53 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Up to £400 - Thoughts?

For £400, I'd go with:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H-BK - Devil's Canyon Core i7 4790K CPU & Motherboard Bundle **£45 Saving** £346.98
1 x Deepcool Lucifer CPU-Cooler - 140mm £28.99
Total : £385.57 (includes shipping : £8.00).

That cooler will probably cool slightly better than the H80i, or on a par, and you get an i7-4790K at 4.4GHz Turbo even before overclocking, and mobo with 5 year warranty.

Obviously, your mate would need to make sure that cooler fits in his case, or get a smaller one.

And ask OcUK if they can give you the free stuff that comes with the i7-4790K this week - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-539-IN

That H100i is quite expensive tbh, better of going for a new unit with the full warranty
