My Son wants to upgrade his PC that he uses mainly for gaming.
Full Spec:
A10 6800K (stock)
Gigabyte F2 A88XM D3H motherboard,
8GB Avexir Ram (2133) but running at 1600
Corsair CX 500 PSU
Sapphire R9 270 2GB GPU
WD Blue 1 TB drive
AULA ? keyboard and mouse (was about £25.00) which has been OK really.
Acer 24" 1080p 60 Hz monitor.
Hyper X cloud ii headset.

Wants to upgrade but not sure where to start...Will have around £200 to spend beginning of April.

I have suggested to get a 250 GB SSD and a good Keyboard and mouse.
Obviously he can't really upgrade his PC without changing CPU socket.
Need advice and ideas.
250 GB SSD is ~£80 + Mech Keyboard ~£80 + Mouse ~£30 = £190.00

He will probably get an upgrade at xmas to an i5 and a better GPU.

What would you do ?

I'm guessing there's a reason the RAM isn't running at 2133? That would provide more FPS in some/most games till he gets his i5 + GPU upgrade. Upgrade graphics drivers too if he hasn't already.

One thing I'd do is wait till the new AMD video cards are out as that may have an impact on your future PSU considerations. Because the CX 500 is not suitable to run 290s for instance. Can always go Nvidia but best to keep options open, as they are limited on the GPU front, really. Red or green pill.

TBH dont know if £200 will do it, where to start. I'd suggest a120-250gb ssd and then save money for something more substantial later on. £400-£500 down the line would let him get a nice cpu/mobo/(+possibly ram)/gpu combo which would last him ages.

Yeah, thats kind of the point - I'm not prepared to spend anything on the socket so just wondered what folk would spend their money on for parts that can benefit now and be transferred to a new build later on.

Depends what it's struggling with really, which games? (If he's just itching I'd tell him to forget it.)

As you've already noticed there's no point upgrading the APU to Kaveri because CPU performance is similar.

Forget upgrading memory if you're not using the igpu.

The only other thing to do is buy a new GPU and carry it over. Also an SSD if you can be bothered reinstalling everything in a year's time.

Yes I think it's mainly an itch but upon closer inspection earlier I noticed his OS partition was about as full as can be so hampered performance maybe...?

Reinstalling OS is a piece of cake these days and takes about 20 mins so I'm not too fussed really.

Considering getting a 120 GB SSD for the OS and a 500 GB SSD for steam.
Everything else can go on the 1TB HDD.
I reckon this would cost around £210.00.

I don't think a new GPU would make a lot of difference atm as hes happy with the GFX side of things for now.
