Just asked a question in the GPU section, and a CPU upgrade was also mentioned in there.

My son's current system :-

RTX3070 FE
AMD Ryzen 5 5700X
Noctua NH-U12S SE-AM4 CPU Cooler
MSI B550-A PRO
Corsair Vengeance 32GB 3200Mhz
Corsair MP600 PRO NH 2TB
Crucial 2TB SSD
Corsair RM750i
Gamemax F15M case

He games on a 165hz 1440P monitor.

Is it worth an upgrade to a 5700X3D or 5800X3D? Thanks.

Depends on the price really, if you can sell the 5700x for a decent price and maybe find a deal on a 2nd hand 5800x3d, it might be worth it.

But if you're just paying for a new 5800x3d it's not gonna be worthwhile for me.

The 5700x is a solid gaming cpu, certainly within its budget range, and for a lot of games you're likely to be mostly gpu limited, and will only see a modest performance jump.

For reference I have a 3900x and an RX 6800, a slower gaming cpu and slightly faster gpu also 1440p and it's very rare at least in the games I play that I am held back by the cpu. 9 times out of 10 I'm gpu limited.

What about upgrading from a 5600x to a 5800x3d ?

I only have a 3070ti, kinda feeling lacking in both CPU and GPU now, but dont have the cash to splash out on both!!

It depends on the games you play, the settings and the resolution. The 5700X3D/5800X3D are decent upgrades.

Generally speaking, you want MMOs, racing games/sims, or competitive gaming at lower resolutions, but it varies a lot:

That HSF looks a bit puny. I wouldn't be keen to use it on a 5800X3D, but a 5700X3D might survive for strictly gaming purposes. I upgraded from a 5700X to a 5700X3D, and oddly the latter is cooler in games, but goes nuclear when put under a 100% non-gaming CPU workload. The 5800X3D will just be nuclear all the time from what I can tell.

In general though, I wouldn't recommend upgrading the CPU on that system. Unless he's playing strictly ideal X3D games like WoW and Factorio, I'd suspect the GPU is going to be the main bottleneck 95% of the time.

Upgrade your GPU rather - the 5700X is good enough and you’d be better off saving up for a whole new rig in a couple years time.

An upgrade to a 6 year old ecosystem to wring a few more frames out of a 3070 seems a dubious value at best

TBH that cpu/gpu seems well matched.

Agree, the cost and hassle is just not worth it imho

a 3600 might be a slightly better proposition, my brother made that upgrade and he claimed it to be worth it.
