Ive decided its gonna be at least a couple of years until I can afford a pc overhaul, so want to give myself the best longevity and performance I can currently get....

It seems that the x2 4800 are all but vanished, apart from a few on ebay, so I wondered is this my only affordable worthwhile final upgrade..????

opteron 165, still cheap on many e-tailers

Agreed either the 165 / 170 Optys or possibly if you can find on a X2 4400+ would also be decent. Although at stock and in applications that are not multithreaded you won't actually be upgrading. (majority of current games for example)

in your shoes I would strongly recommend the 165. They have been on sale for just over a 100 inc. VAT RETAIL.
The stock cooler on the opteron dual core is very nice too. Solid, 80mm fan and with heatpipes.
I am yet to see a 165 that will not hit 2.6ghz assuming you have hardware to support it.

They are the best value for money unless you consider C2D, but then you need new mobo etc..

I'm still after a Dual Core Opteron or X2 on S939

Server at work is on it's last legs. Don't really want to completely rebuild it so just replacing the chip is the best bet.

Just trying to find a cheapish one to do it with is a real pita.
