Just looking for some opinions on a GPU upgrade. I changed my monitor recently to a HP LP2475 ( 24" ) after my previous 22" display died. With the new display I now have access to 1900 x 1200 resolution gaming. I'm not much of a FPS gamer, tending to stick to RTS and RPG's such as CoH, Sup Commander, Fallout 3, DoW2, Total War series, The Witcher etc.

Processor is presently a Q9650 running at stock, with 8Gb of corsair dominator memory and a Corsair HX620W PSU.

I prefer NVIDIA over ATI, due to better driver support and I'm looking for a single card solution ( as I don't believe my PSU would have the power for an SLI or Crossfire setup ).

Don't really have a budget in mind, but the most cost efficient option is always good ;)

I went from a heavily overclocked 8800GTS 512 to a GTX 280 I managed to get second hand and all my games have literally doubled in fps. On top of that, AA doesnt chew into your frames per second as much, for example on my GTS I would have 4XAA and the fps would drop to about 19 but when I went to 8X it would plummet to about 5 fps. With the 280 going from 4XAA to 8X only lost me about a frame per second.

Try and find a second hand GTX 280 I would say for best value for money, I still think the 285 is a bti of a rip off personally :D

Ok, I'll try and look out for a GTX 280 - but I could be struggling !
I've been happy with BFG cards thus far and wouldn't have a problem with buying another. I'm just wondering, however, if the higher texture memory in the GTX 285 ( compared to the 275 ) will make a difference at 1900 x 1200 resolution. Quite a mark up in price between the two though.

I am in the same situation as you. I have a BFG 8800GTS OC 512, upgrading to anything like a HD4850 / GTS 250 is a no go as you have near enough the same amount of graphics power. So that leaves you with 4870 / 90, 260 and 275 and unless you have lots of cash to play which buys you a 285, 295 or the 4870 X2.

I have decided to wait until the next round of graphics cards are out as all my games run fine on my 22" screen. But at the resolution you are playing at I bet your 8800GTS isn't what it used to be :(

So i would think you need to upgrade to a GTX 260 or higher or wait :p

Another 8800GTS 512 user here - I'm going to see what ATi have to offer come November, and then depending on the prices, either nab one of the new cards or an older one that'll hopefully drop in price.

Same here BFG 8800GTS 512 OC. Arma 2 is killing my fps at 1920x1200 (25-30). Its the only game I play now. Is there a new raft of cards coming out soon then? I can wait but am ready for a gpu upgrade.

I suppose the most sensible option is to wait and see what the new generation of cards will bring. But, it's ATI that will be first to the table ( I'm not a huge fan ) and NVIDIA's cards are likely not until at least the turn of the year. Getting a new, larger monitor has forced my hand somewhat .... and made me impatient. Think I'll try and wait if I can too, for ATI's offerings, then opt for a GTX 275 or 285 if they aren't that appealing.

GTS 512 owner here too. Am running all games (that I play...) fine at 1920x1200 res. Crysis clearly struggles and ARMA 2 (demo) was playable but at much reduced settings.

I will be waiting until the next batch of games that will be released this autumn and get a GPU to match. MW2 and BF Bad Company 2 and who knows maybe even BF3? :D
