Hi guys,

Thinking about replacing my Nikon D80 Body with something a little bit more up to date before I go travelling for 6months to a year.

Not followed the whole Photography business in a while, just like to take photos :)

I am not going to go Canon as I got my Nikkor Lenses. It does not need to film as I got a GoPro Hero 3, but if I can get something decent then why not include it.

Would like something that works better in low level light than the D80 without it being super grainy.

Also, I mainly do extreme sports photography

Lenses I got

Nikkor 1.4 50mm
Nikkor 10.5mm 1.2 fisheye
Nikkor 55-200mm VR
Nikkor 18-135 Kit lense (came with D80)

Flash Nikkor SB600.

Thanks in Advance

Need a budget, but the new D7100 is going to be worth a look as will the current D7000 especially when the second hand prices drop. This is if you want to stay with a crop sensor?

The D7100 is around that (£1099 UK). I'd wait to see the reviews on this if I were you. As you seem to keep your camera body for a while I'd go for the best you can afford now? If you want to save cash, the D300s, D7000 and even possibly the D90 are all worth looking at. I'd try out the D90 and D7000 first though, as the AF might not be the step forward you are looking for. ISO performance would be the best on the D7000 (D7100 will likely be the much better option for all out performance).

For 1k you could also look at a D700, although the second hand prices of these has gone back up since the D800 was released. I'm not sure if your lenses are all FX compatible though?

D7000 should be right up your street and you'll enough left too add a decent zoom lens as well if you need one.

I am just reading the review for the D7000...(not finished yet)

My mate has a Canon and has a software installed on it called Magic Lantern. Is there a Nikon equivilant i can install on the D7000?

No but for most photographers it really doesn't add much at all imo, its honestly not something that should cloud your decision.

D7100, pro level AF system covering large part of frame, state of the art sensor, perfect size and weight for most people and most uses. The buffer is small so if you are one of the spray and pray machine gunners then you will want something like the D300s (much the same functionality, old sensor, but very fast and large buffer), otherwise wait for the D400 replacement to D300 (I am betting summer release or announcement). D700 Full frame camera will also net you high speeds but the reduced pixel density will force you to buy some expensive long lenses if you need reach.

Otherwise D7000 is certainly a substantial upgrade from a D80, if you get one at a good price then it is a bargain.

There's £100 cash back on the D7000 at the moment, and it can easily be found for £650 body only. Used ones are starting to pop up under £500. I think it's the best bang for buck upgrade from where you are now.

Otherwise the D7100 looks fantastic, but it's getting on for twice the price. I wouldn't buy one since it's likely there will be a price drop in the next few months.

Time to read the Review on the D7100

Oh not sure if these are previews or reviews now haha

Has anybody found a proper Review as apposed to a preview?

I wouldn't mind getting the D7100 instead of D7000... I know it's more expensive but I buy a new body.....well....hardley ever.
