Hi,

Very long time lurker (and very occasional poster) - but its come round to time to upgrade my system again so just looking for a bit of advice really.

Currently running
E6600 Dual Core clocked to 3.2Ghz
4gb DDR2 Ram
Gigabyte DS3 Motherboard
Ati 4890 1Gb graphics (bought on the 'this week only' a week ago :D )

Looking to upgrade the CPU, Mobo and RAM for a budget of around £300. I am a bit out of touch as to the performance of CPUs recently. I have done a bit of research and a system based around a AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core 720 Black Edition seems like it could be good.

Would I see much of an improvement over my aging E6600? I mainly play games so nothing to intensive like encoding. Again I would try to overclock the 720 - what sort of overclock could I expect on high end air cooling - is 4Ghz acheivable? Am i better off playing the waiting game for Intel i5 or AMDs next offering?

Any advice or recommendations gratefully received,

Cheers,

Impster

IMO going from an E6600 @ 3.2gig to a Phenom II platform is a move sideways at best... and if you do a lot of gaming potentially a silly move...

Sure you can hedge your bets on the AM3 upgrade path being better in the future... but imo stick with the E6600 for now.
