upgrade from gigabyte 7950

An R280 (non X) is the same as a 7950 and OcuK stock plenty of those so you could add one of those if needed.

Or you could sell your 7950 and get a 290.

I would go crossfire if I were you, not worth the outlay for a more powerful card

To be fair a 290 isn't actually that far off a 7950CF setup, will also have a lot less problems so I'd sell up and start again IMO.

when i built my pc two years ago i just stopped reading and researching into the latest components :S so i havnt really a clue at the minute.

Should be the 280s without the 'x.

But if there's 280x at good price, surely they would be better choice than 280...and crossfire don't need to be the exact same card to work, but just need to be the same GPU family I think?

The truth is - you can flash a R9 280 BIOS onto your 7950 and get a new card for free

That is the reason that no one is selling off their 7950/7970/7870 etc.

Because except the R9 290 or higher class card, they are just rebranded 79xx cards
