Hi,

Sometime in the near ish future I'm looking to upgrade from my Dell U2311H, to an MSI 27" 1440p 180Hz monitor. I currently have a Ryzen 2600 and GTX 980.

I will probably pick up a second hand 5700X3D to prolong the CPU side of things.

I mostly play League of Legends so nothing demanding, but hoping to pick up Baldurs Gate 3 at some point. When I get around to it I'll play other things in my Steam, RE1, RE2, etc. I also have an Oculus Quest 2, and I do have games like HF Alyx that I've not played yet.

What would be the minimum GPU I would be looking at getting (second hand is ok) to make use of the monitor?

1. For League of Legends only, would the 980 still cope?
2. For games like BG3 at decent frame rates
3. Would a GPU for 2. be good enough for VR as well, or would that require an even more powerful GPU?

Thanks in advance.

For AMD I'd suggest 6750 XT (< £300), RX 6800 non-XT (~£350) or 7700 XT.

For nvidia, I mean... even a 4060 could do it and is twice what you have, but realistically I'd be looking at a 4070 or 4070 Super, especially if you want to use VR.

You can get Intel's A770 16GB for £240 at OCUK too, which is not a bad price and the VRAM and XESS upscaling would be helpful at that resolution, but no idea how that does with VR, or how it performs in BG3.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't really want to spend 4070 money sadly, and in all honesty VR would likely be a very very small part of my gaming.

Having a quick look on marketplace, I could get a 3070 8GB for about £250. How well would that hold up? Or would the lack memory be limiting?

Thanks. A quick look more, used 6750XT go for £200, and 6800 can potentially be got for about £250. I'd assume the 6800 is worth the £50 extra for both the power and increase in memory?

VR is an issue on the A770. AIUI it's not officially supported. However, it is supposed to be supported on Arc Battlemage. We'll find out tomorrow or next week.

Arc Battlemage will be launched tomorrow. The B580 - the mid-range card - will be about £250.

I will probably pick up a second hand 5700X3D to prolong the CPU side of things.

This is a good move.
