Was thinking of upgrading to ryzen 2600.
However I'm not sure if I'd see much benefit from a 2500k [email protected].
Would want a mild oc on 2600 to about 4.2ghz.
I'm not sure that the performance increases will be noticeable for the outlay of cpu, mobo and ram approx £400?
Mainly use it for gaming and browsing. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd suggest just getting more RAM (if it is possible) and a new GPU as that CPU is still good for gaming today.

As above, on the whole, the 2500k is still a good gaming chip for 1080p gaming.

I say "on the whole" because I have a 4 core/4 thread CPU and I've noticed a couple of games really hammer it, noticeably Battlefield 1. It still manages 60FPS but CPU usage is constanty in the 90-100% range while playing.

So it depends what games you play. I recommend upgrading your graphics card first and then running some monitoring software (such as MSI Afterburner) and looking back at the CPU and memory usage graphs after playing your games. You'll then see if the CPU and/or RAM are limiting you.

If it's just the RAM, stick another 8GB in there.
If it's the CPU, then look at Ryzen and migrate the new graphics card over.

That's what I'd do at least.

I still have an i5-2500k @ 4.5 with a GTX1080 and I can still run all modern games at max settings, including Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
I don't bother doing any fps tests as every game seems to run smooth enough with no hiccups

As others have stated, more ram and a new GPU would yield much better results; the CPU is still very good for gaming.

I have the 2500k and thought I would need a full system upgrade.
Currently have an 7950 graphics card from the build I did and I think 8gb of memory hyper x.

How does my card hold up these days? I'm currently gaming at 1080p.
I have thought about upgrading the resolution but that would mean new monitor etc. Hopefully I can maintain my current PC with just a few affordable changes without needing the whole motherboard cpu.

Thanks I will check the prices. Can remember that card cost me
Garb a 1060 6GB or an RX 580, should keep you going for another 2-3 years until your CPU starts to struggle.
£300 and hardly used it.
I used to know all the cards and cup numbers etc. But been out of the PC Race for around 6 years and back to being a noob.

I'm guessing 3D headset gaming is out of the question without a beefy full upgrade?
Had a taste with my Galaxy S6 and the 3D on video looks amazing ;0p

Just before prices took a sensible dip (because my timing is always immaculate!) I swapped a 7950 for a 1070 in my [email protected] and frame rates roughly doubled in benchmarks across the board. Did I notice the difference in games? Not really, because I was never one to dial all the bells and whistles up for no real benefit. It's nice to be able to dial things up now, but it doesn't change the experience enough to justify it (for me).

VR performance smoothed up nicely, but given how surprisingly well the 7950 handled most things I tried and how rarely I put the headset on now, it was a daft upgrade. If I could have the £409 back now I'd lose the 1070 in a heartbeat. The 7950 was a beast of a card in its day, and the 2500k was the last great chip Intel made. However upgrading is a hobby in itself and sometimes you just have to scratch the itch.

Lanacane's cheaper though. :-)

Yeah, I have just looked into the same.
For some reason I was leaning towards the 1060 6gb. Also this card has lower power usage.
Occasionally I get a blue screen and ain't a clue what it is. So using less power draw than my 7950 May nigate that fact as currently have my 2500k clocked at 4.2ghz

The rx580 seem to be cheaper 2nd hand yet more expensive new!?

I did also look at the 1070 aswell which 2nd hand would cost the same as a new 1060.

Damn, looks like I got the upgrade itch again. But now knowing that with my setup I have a little more life to push with the i5 2500k. Plus also maybe dip toes into vr. It's Deffo something I need to way up.
New v 2nd hand (I usually always buy new for warranty)
1060 v 580 (or 1070 2nd hand) hmmmm!?

This could be due to them being mining cards, the 580 was one of the most popular mining cards at the height of it. Now that the mining craze has died down a bit people could be trying to sell.

Ahh, does this mean if they have been used for mining, they will have been hammered and constantly working?
I think the 1060 6gb for the less power draw seems to be tempting.
Though if I want to spend some bucks the 1070 and a Windows Reality Virtual Headset sounds like a good one if I fancy some 3D games.

Just hope if I went that route, the headset isn't a novelty after a few weeks. Got a massive back log of Steam games, so knowing I can shove them all on Ultra settings at 1080p would be really nice to d o once again

Hmmm
1060 new at £240
1070ti MSI at £409 (Ti same price as standard 1070)
Or seen 1080 on fleabay at £360 though a lot of cash for a 2nd hander of there's issues down the line hmmm!?
