Upgrade from i5 760 to 2500k or wait a bit.

So i currently have an ageing i5 760 CPU which i have only just overclocked (first time doing so) using some gigabyte software to 3.15Ghz.
Already i have seen a massive increase in performance playing Rome 2 at 1920x1080.
TW games are a massive CPU drain.

I have the chance to acquire an i5 2500k CPU and GA-P67A-UD4 Mobo for nothing if my brother upgrades .

Will that be a worthwhile upgrade from my 760 or should i wait it out for a while and maybe try to OC the 760 more?

I play games at 1920x1080, have an SSD, 8GB 1600Mhz RAM and a GTX460OC card which may be upgrading to a 7950 or 670 soon also.
Looking for good performance with Rome 2, maybe BF4 and other upcoming games.

If it is a 'free' upgrade - why not?

You can either sell or keep as a spare your old cpu and board.

I had hoped to link to the Anand Cpu comparitor but cannot get it to workm correctly - have a go yourself; hopefully you will have a little more joy than I've had !

The 2500k is a great upgrade and will still last a long while, 2 generations on mine is still going well.. :)

Most of them overclock like a beast too, can get to 4.8 on mine for benching, though happy at 4.7 (winter) and 4.5 (summer). :)

A big fan of my 2500K.

So easy to overclock and temps are really good using one of those closed loop watercooling thingymajigs.

Skipping Haswell complately, but I will be having a close look at Broadwell next year. There may even be an outside chance that it is totally feasible to wait until the new Skylake the year after. However, I reckon it will be struggling quite a bit by then.

It my brother who wants to upgrade his pc from the 2500k to an i5 3570. Not a major upgrade from what ive read but he still wants to, and would rather go for the 3570 than the Haswells apparently. Also said an i7 would be a waste as he only games on his PC.

Im not gonna say no to a free 2500k upgrade, though its hard to keep my mouth from telling him his upgrade would be small :)
Hes gonna upgrade his GPU to a GTX670 or AMD 7950 from his current GTX460oc at the same time too.

Heh, i think i'll have to talk to him, if he still wants to upgrade i'll have talk him into a haswell, a 4670 looks good i think.

yeah... no point going from a 2500k to a 3570k if you have to put money for it... I "upgraded" from a 2600k to a 3770k because I had to put only £10.00 difference.

Convince your brother to go with a 4670k instead of the 3570k. I don't see any point in going from a 2500k to 3570k. If he does upgrade take the 2500k and sell your current parts while they are still worth money. 1156 stuff has been reaching good prices on the bay lately.
