Hi guys, My mate is after upgrading is old AMD Phenom X2 955, so he wants to buy my i5 760, DDR3 and mobo combo from me.

The 760 is still a good CPU and it doesnt need upgrading but i thought maybe its a good chance to upgrade now before the price of the 760 really starts to plumit.

What CPU would you get? its only for gaming and dont want to spend more than £180 if possible, Ive got a HYper 212 on my 760 but ive lost all the extra fittings that came with it, Can i transfer this cooler onto the 1155 boards without any additional fittings?

will i see much of an improvment in games with an upgrade?

Thanks

The mounting brackets for 1156 and 1155 are the same. In terms of a CPU the only reasonable upgrade is a i5 3570k. The new unlocked chips (especially the core i3s) are not as fast assuming the 760 is overclocked to 3.8GHz.

3570k is the one I'd be after I think . My 760 is running at 3.8ghz .Do you think its worth the extra llet's say £70 to upgrade my kit over what I can sell my old 760 for ?

IB i5 + motherboard is likely to run in at £250. Off the top of my head the Lynnfield cores in the 760 are about 10% slower clock for clock against sandybridge, so at 3.8GHz is roughly equivalent to a stock ivy bridge i5 3570k (without turbo boost that is). However, you can OC the 3570k to at least 4.2GHz with your cooler in which case it would be at least 25% faster than your 760 but consume half the power.

In gaming terms it probably won't make much of a difference, as the 760 at that speed is unlikely to bottleneck a single card setup at 1080p. It really depends on what the rest of you components are and how you like to play your games. For me personally I go for framerate over visuals so I wouldn't notice much of a difference.

Thanks for the reply . I don't need the upgrade as the 760 hasn't felt slow in anything son far. It might be worth upgrading just for resale value in the future

Just bear in mind you would have to buy the higher end chips to gain a performance parity as the lower end chips cannot overclock. But it isn't exactly a bad idea as now is a good time to sell the old chips. The upgrade should net you at least 25% CPU improvement if you overclock as well as consuming far less power, and since you have a buyer for the old components it makes the upgrade good value.

I am in the same situation with my core i5 760.

Going to sandybridge or ivybridge just isnt worth it at the moment for me.

Shame as i keep getting the urge to build a new setup but cant think of a good reason too.

hi guys i had a i5 760 @4.00ghz.
bought it 2 years ago as a package from ocuk.that litlle baby(as i called it)never let me down once,i loaded the ocuk bios profile for the 4ghz,never had a crash in 2 years.
people worry about temps to much aswell, all that time at 4ghz prime95 24hours would have temps of upto 75 degrees, never missed a beat.

the i5 760 has a t/case max of 72.5 but thats a very safe margin.
i had my 760 @4.4ghz 24hrs prime95 temps of 85 still never missed a beat, you can take about ten degrees of prime95 temps for normal everyday use as you will not stress the cpu to those temps in normal everyday use.
so guys overclock them and wait till something comes out that realy catches your eye and pocket, awseome little cpu :)

I have a i5 3570K at the moment and I am very impressed with itr. Handles everything throw at it very well and is a good price. Basicly what I'm trying to say is that the 3570K gets my vote.

I'm in the same boat at the moment too, I just can't seem to get my 760 stable at 4ghz or above - been thinking about a 3770k for video work etc but would love to squeeze some more out of the i5 and wait for the next generation of stuff...

I actually went from an i5 760 and sold it for 80 quid just for the chip on gum tree. I now updated to a i5 3570k oc to 4.5ghz and tbh I see the difference! Before on bf3 my fps would go as low as 40 fps. Now I see the fps at low 60s and that's rock bottom! On average it's around 70-80 fps.
