Hi guys,

I'm thinking of upgrading my old i7 920 2.6 processor to one of the Ivybridge processors, specifically the Intel Core i7-3770K 3.50GHz processor. I wondered how much of a performance increase I would get over my old processor as these new processors seem pretty cheap compared to the older i7's!

I'm currently running the 920 with a Rampage Extreme motherboard and 6 gigs of ram but would also upgrade to the Rampage III with 32gigs of Ram as I do a lot of graphics intensive work but do some gaming too!

Thanks,

El

Save yourself the money. You won't notice much difference in gaming/graphics work if you overclock your 920 to 4ghz as both will have 8 threads.

If you're planning to get more than 16gb RAM, make sure you have Windows Pro or Ultimate, Home Premium has a max limit of 16gb.

On the other hand what sort of graphic intensive work do you do? A good Nvidia card might help if the software you use makes full use of CUDA.

ok thanks... these ivybridge chips seem to be aimed at the mainstream consumer market. Only problem is I do have a decent cooler on my i7 and try clocking it to 3.2ghz but temps were hitting 80degrees C... Not sure why.

Agreed, wait for Haswell...

I have mine running at 4.11 and I don't believe I'm struggling in anything other than BF3 MP but I'm still pulling 95fps on a 32 man server....good enough for me!

These chips are the best chips in the last decade I reckon, I'm keeping mine until Haswell is released and then I'll buy 3-4months after that probably.

Above only applies if your just a gamer....if your doing movie editing...I havent a clue...but people say you would see a benefit.

you will hit 3.8 on that 920DO easy for 24/7 the temps your getting that's ether your heatsink needs reseating or airflow, even both, what's the cooler?

forget ivy thats a side step with having a 920 also them ivy's run hot due to tim used instead of solder.

I've been running my i7 920 D0 at stock for a while now - really must get around to overclocking it again, but have forgotten the settings.

Also hoping my Corsair H50 is still up to it...

If its a DO do some experimental OC my DO was cherry picked and does 4.5ghz on air easy code batch

The 920 clocks very well but some like a safe headroom for heat and volts for 24/7.

Granted i have posted these before, but god knows what i was doing with my Alpenföhn K2 Mount Doom put the fans on wrong way, now corrected.

4.5ghz 50 passes of IBT hour of Prime still running as i post this, any more and it will have to wait max temp 74 degee, you cannot live with that hmm. Show me your IBT temps. HT off but makes little difference, used for games nothing else.

Same here, I have pre loaded clocks in my bios for 3.2ghz and 4ghz but they don't work.

Ivy a side step from a 920 !?. Perhaps going from a SB.

I agree the 920 is still a decent chip but having recently upgraded to Ivy it was a worthy upgrade.

it is when you look at the 2011 socket as 1366 is classed as enthusiast platform just like 2011, ivy is really a replacement for SB.

Can you honestly say you notice a large difference with Ivy? Or are you just trying to justify your purchase ;)

Because i'll be honest, i've not noticed a massive difference going from a Q9550 at 3.4Ghz to an i5 2500K at 4.3Ghz. Sure I get better benchmarks and BF3 runs a bit faster and smoother, but it's certainly not night and day difference in general use. I'm sure if I was doing some heavy number crunching the difference would be more marked though.

Not a massive difference, no. After all its typically the gpu that makes the largest difference in games, but I don't really need to justify my purchase, I wanted to upgrade my system so I did.
