Hey guys looking to upgrade my pc next month, going to be getting a new gpu probably a 670 or 680 and a new CPU and mobo.

I was originally thinking about getting a sb chip however I have heard a lot of good things about the 2011 CPU's.

Would i notice a big performance increase if I was to upgrade to say amd's eight core bulldozer chip?

I use my pc for gaming(arma 2 and bf3 atm) but will be playing arma 3 when released.

Any advice to help me decide which CPU to get would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

If gaming is your primary use id hold onto the i7 950 for the time being. Im running a 920 at 4ghz with a gtx 670, plays any game im running with ease, bf3 for example with all details on highest. Personally im holding out to see what haswell offers. Is your cpu at stock or overclocked. An 8 core chip isnt gonna be fully utilised in many present games tbh.

No I did have it overclocked to 3.8 but ATM it's at stock until I get a new heatsink.I was reading about haswell too, is it going to be released in April?
I guess if I overclock my i7 950 to 4ghz I can resist the upgrade itch till Haswell.a gpu upgrade will do fine for the meantime.

What kinda temps does your i7 920 run at 4 ghz?

Ive also read about an april release for haswell. At 4ghz my 920 hits 76c under LinX/Intel burn test, gaming im seeing the mid 60's. Cooler is an Alpenfohn k2. Until recently i was running gtx 470's in sli, switched to a single gigabyte gtx 670 windforce.

They sound like decent temps will need to check out alpenfohn I guess.

Big difference with the new 670 yea? I think going from a 6950 would be a decent performance boost for me too.

Ok cheers for the help mate.

I'd stick with the 950 mate as I have one at 4.2Ghz and completely stable @ 36 Deg idle, 75 deg maxed out with Prime for 2 hours.
Currently running a 670 from Gigabyte aswell, upgraded from sli GTX 460's as I was stuttering with VRAM limitations. 670 not only decreased my temps rapidly, but increased performance by 45% after overclocking
I.e BF3 @ Ultra 44 FPS and stutters/micro to 60+ FPS at pretty much all times, even with x4 MSAA etc.
Arma is generally hard to run anyway due to poor coding, I get around 44 FPS maxed out. Arma 2 with slightly lowered gfx imo. looks terrible.
