Hiya all

At the moment i have a mobile barton at 2.5ghz on a abit nf2 with 6800gs oc and 2gb of g.skill pc4000 hz, ive been offered a DFI NF3 Lanparty 250gb with a 754 [email protected], for a very good price including a xp-90, the thing is i want to know is, do you recon i will see a performance increase, and the other thing is will i need to upgrade to windows xp 64bit to get the most out of it.

Many thanks

Ben

You'll see a bit of a boost yes, whats the asking price? If its good then i'd go for it and no, no need for XP64 to take advantage of the upgrade.

Which Venice is that? If it's the 3000+, which are the only ones i have seen on 754 (and then extremely rare), then that thing is overclocked to death. Stock speed should be 2ghz, so that has a 800mhz overclock. What voltage is he giving it and what are the temps like? Do you have a good case with good airflow?

Yes you should see a boost in performance and no you will not need XP64. If it is a 3000+ then it's not that good a deal either.

Its the 3400 venice, ive been reading around and there sposted to be pretty good clockers and yes there are aparrantly rare but its not the 3000+.

yeah man its £90 all in including shipping ect that why i thinks its a good deal, but all im after in a bit more power in loading games etc so hopefully it should be fine for my needs and it gets me into the 64bit scene i know its only a socket 754 but it lets me keep me agp card which i find fine in most games.

Do ask him what core voltage hes running to get that OC, might be wayy more than the chip would be comfortable with in the long haul.

That'd give you a pretty hefty boost I would have thought, increased clock speed and better clock for clock efficiency, you'd get atleast a 20% increase in CPU performance.

Seems like you're going from one dead socket to another. Yes, it's cheap but I don't think you'll see enough of a difference to warrant the hassle. I'd wait until you can justify going to AM2 or Core2Duo.

I know its a dead socket but, all im after is bit more power and actually be able 2 run my memory at its rated speed at the mo all i can run is 220 due 2 the chipset, and with the a64 i can ave some fun in the bios, got bord of overclocking my mobile and cant really afford a core duo 2 at the minite, and find my graphics card alright at the mo, and i recon £90 for Venice @ 2.8ghz, xp-90c panaflo fan and a dfi lanparty nf3 and shipin from america aint all that bad, i know it outdated but its better than the 1 i got, and seeing next time i upgrade ill have to change every thing like memory the lot, i recon its ok for now,

If its not going to cost you much and you're going to have fun overclocking it I say why not? I've played around with S754 even after its death and its great fun, I had the DFI and a Turion mobile chip, made for a very fast second system that could be run almost passively.

Yeah, in general I think it's worthwhile spending a little more in order to get onto a socket with a decent upgrade path, but 90GBP is too good a deal to pass up imho.
