Upgrade from Opteron 146?

Have you got the AM2 daughter board for that motherboard? if so you could stick that proc in there, i think you'll need some ddr2 ram as well as am2 chips only have a ddr2 memory controler on the chip... (not 100% sure though as im not up on 939 to am2 pathway anymore)

Hmm come to think of it I remember when I bought it there was something about an add on to make it AM2 compatible, anyone know what this was and where I can get it? But if I get this add on basically I can put in any AM2 processor, including the best one ocuk have, the X2 6000?

yeah you will need a addon board to let you use am2 chips. I was in the same boat a couple of weeks ago. same cpu and mobo as you. I ended up ditching it and getting a e5200 and new mobo. I sold my ram to pay for the new DDR2.

After checking used prices for the 146 I decided to just give it along with the mobo to a mate. he was pleased as punch.

not a great help i know. its tricky trying to upgrade old stuff. sometimes its more cost effective to bite the bullet and make a clean start.

If you can find the daugterboard that came with the mobo then you add to it an AMD 5200 X2 according to asrock website.

cheap upgrade for around £50

I think you will struggle to find the AM2CPU Board from a UK supplier at a decent price. In fact I could only find 1 UK supplier selling it and they didnt have a price listed against it. There are quite a few places in the US selling ranging from $30 to $80 but then you would have to figure in shipping etc. Here is the part you need. shame the mobo didnt ship with the thing.

If I remember correctly there was also quite a few issues with this board, specifically memory related I think. im sure there is pleanty of stuff on the web about it. as I siad, it might be worth spending the extra and just making the clean start.

Thanks for the info guys. I specifically didn't want to make a clean start because I can't be bothered installing windows and all that guff again which I believe you need to do when installing a new motherboard :(
