Hi,

My Q6600 setup is starting to give me issues (memory going i think). Served me well but thinking of upgrading. Being honest speed wise it still does me fine :(

AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8320 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail

Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX8GX3M2A1333C9)

MSI 970A-G43 AMD 970 (Socket AM3+) DDR3 ATX Motherboard MSI 970A-G43 AMD 970 (Socket AM3+) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

Thinking of getting the above trio and reuse other parts. Hopefully give me a small speed increase and good stability. Comes to £207. Anything else worth considering? (posted in here as not sure if AMD or Intel at this price point)

What overall budget are you looking to work within?

Little as possible. Got an I7 12gb laptop and it's way more than I need.

I would say 300 max but 200 better :p

(thats for CPU, Mem and board, bought a nice 550w PSU when I got the Q6600, GTX285 but i don't game any more SSD etc already)

Earlier this year I went from a Q6600 to an i7 920 D0 sat on an Asus P6X58 D-E. It overclocks ridiculously easily to 4.0Ghz and coupled up with 16Gb Vengeance RAM and a GTX760 its eating up everything I can throw at it.

Sure, X58/1366 is an old obsolete platform but if you hunt around the MM they pop up now and again for very little money. All depends on how you view buying older gen kit and whether you consider it is worth doing so. That said, your budget allows you to jump forward a few generations from X58 so I'd go with something more up to date. There's an I7-2600K for £200 in the MM just now. I'm really just posting to illustrate how much performance and bang per buck the old 920's can still provide. :)

id just go with a 920, an 2600k for £200 is way over priced lmao

you can pick up a 3930k for £220

When I mentioned a 2600k for sale in the MM at £200 I neglected to say that the price was for a full system minus GPU and HDD:-

  • I7-2600K - Sitting at 4Ghz, looked at taking it above this but lost interest and left it at 4Ghz
  • Asus Z68 Deluxe - Loved this motherboard
  • Coolermaster 850w psu.
  • Corsair ram 8gig
  • Coolermaster HAF 932 case
  • Thermalright Silver Arrow cooler with both fans
  • X-Fi Fatality fps edition sound card with front bay

For £200 all in, that's a very good deal.

Yes that is a good deal and that's what I would go to from a Q6600. Would skip the 920 as decent as it is.
edit: You can get all three, 2600k, Z68 motherboard and 8Gb ram for ~£200

if I was in your position I would opt for a second hand i5 haswell

ive had all the platforms I would rate haswell at the top

Found an i5 haswell and z87 board on auction for £220, memory will add a fair bit though.

I just upgraded my i7 920 to a xeon 5650 6 core chip running at 4Ghz, the chip was only 69 quid also on a certain auction site. If you can find a cheap x58 board and memory that would be a decent update too.

what motherboard did you use for the Xenon? I have a EX58 UD5 gigabyte board, wonder if that would work.

That would work fine, I've used an asus p6x58d-e, and a gigabyte ex58 UD3R with the xeon 5650, had to update the bios on the gigabyte as it was an older board, but no problems.

hi, dont want to hijack your thread but i'm in same boat.i have q6600 but have been offered a i7 920 @ 2.67 (says it hasn't been oc'd ) -giga x58-udr3 - 6gb ddr3. price is 150 but i might be able to get it for 125/100.will it be a fair upgrade ?
sorry again op :)

The i7 920/930/950/960 CPU's are usually a safe bet, very rare to come across a duff one. It's the X58 motherboards that are like gold dust these days, ones in good working order that is. You will still pay a premium for a good X58 board simply because although they are still excellent performers they are very scarce nowadays. The prices on that well known auction site are absolutely crazy for premium X58 boards. And don't even try to find one brand new, almost impossible unless you want to shell out £200-£300 on the motherboard alone!

For the parts you have mentioned then £100-£125 is a fair price as long as the mobo is in good nick. :) The good thing about buying these old 1366 setups is that you almost always get your initial investment back when you come to sell, at least at this point in time anyway.
