Upgrade from R5 1600

what cooler do you have at present?
it may be more worthwhile to get a better cooler (which will come with thermal paste)

the £16 thermalright assassin king ak120se springs to mind immediately, and it comes with high quality paste...and rgb if that's your cup of tea too lol :)
no point getting a beast cpu and hamstringing it with a wraith stealth lol
i have the cryorig H7 so should be all good

Reasonable, but I'd just like them a little less for me to bite, personally
you must be drinking the koolaid lol

they are/were very recently £111 inc tax + shipping
(the 7500f for comparison is/was recently £95 inc tax + shipping)

i doubt the 5700x3d is going to get much cheaper than that during its useful lifetime as a higher-end gaming cpu
don't forget it's the second best gaming cpu (besides the 5800x3d) of a dead platform
(which is incidentally why similar intel chips carry a price premium, despite being essentially obsolete eg the 4790k, 7700k, 9900k etc)

The problem I have with it being that price is that the 9600x is about £140-150, so it doesn't really make sense to go for the 5700x3d

you can’t compare the two.

If you’re buying a new system you go am5. If you have an am4 system which you want to extend the life of then you go 5700x3d

£140 + mobo + ram = a lot more than £130
You can, I did.

The 5800X3D with 3600Mhz DDR4 + a good motherboard was a couple hundred quid cheaper than the 7800X3D + 6000Mhz DDR5 + a good motherboard. Might have been even more than that actually. Not everyone upgrades to the latest and greatest, because money. I went from a Phenom II x4 965 BE to an i7 7700K to a 5800X3D. Each time I was a gen or two behind, because bang for buck. What's holding my system back is this ancient Vega 56 as GPU prices are still absurd.

Point largely missed though, because you don't need a 7800X3D to compete with a 5800X3D. A cheaper AM5 chip is still competitive and you can drop in a newer chip later.
The total cost of ownership works out cheaper than buying an old dead end platform.

Edit:
AM4 3d chips are still a great buy for those already on the AM4 platform, and the AM4 platform was until recently still a great budget platform option, but with cheaper AM5 options it's in most cases not the best option

this

if solely for gaming then the ryzen 7600/x trades blows with the 5800x3d (unless for specific use cases where the x3d is clearly superior like msfs or mmogs)
if you're comparing cpus with similar gaming performance, i would hazard a guess that the total build cost would be very similar between a 7600/x and 5800x3d, because you're paying a premium for the best am4 gaming chip (5800x3d)
