Upgrade from Ryzen 5 2600, for gaming and 4k editing

Hello,

I've been looking to upgrade my CPU for a while now, skipping the 5600 option, and going for a ryzen 5 5700x. I game with a 1440p monitor and feel my cpu is bottlenecked in some games, especially Starfield and Hell let loose, as regardless of which video setting I choose, my fps doesn't change.

I edit with Sony Vegas 14, and they've removed the option to render things from my GPU, so anytime I'm working with 4k videos, it's very sluggish, playback is usually only a few fps.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated.

Current specs
B450 Tomahawk Max
Corsair 16GB DDR4 3000 Mhz C15 XP 2.0
Ryzen 5 2600
Nvidia 3070

Thanks

For productivity/gaming a 5900X or if you want more gaming emphasis a 5800X3D. Both will cost about the same. Upgrade your ram to 32GB.
Do you have any recommendations for the best ram for my motherboard?

DDR4 memory slots, support up to 64GB*
Supports 1866/ 2133/ 2400/ 2667Mhz (by JEDEC)
Supports 2667/ 2800/ 2933/ 3000/ 3066/ 3200/ 3466 MHz
(by A-XMP OC MODE)

They look great, you can probably drop CL to 16 with very little effort.

I would consider building an AM5 system now, the Ryzen 7600X would be a good choice, maybe with the cheapest 32GB kit of 7800 MT/s RAM you can find (Should be around £200).

You mention Starfield as a game that's struggling, really the only good options from AMD for this game are Ryzen 7000 series CPUs.

I'd say your graphics card will bottleneck you, its a good GPU, but it will struggle in some games above 1080p resolution anyway, so wouldn't see much benefit from a vcache CPU.

You can then upgrade to a Zen 5 CPU, which are scheduled to release by Q4 2024.

Most Gigabyte B650 and above boards have decent DDR5 module support, upto 8000 MT/s.

I wouldn't spend a ton of cash upgrading an AM4 build for gaming, the 5800XD is more expensive than the Ryzen 7600X and 7700X, which both perform well in gaming.

Buying DDR4 for an existing system seems not worth it.

Prices on DDR5 RAM and B650 motherboards have improved quite a lot.

Based on this video:

I think some games will show decent gains from the 5700X you were planning on, but some games not so much.

Hmm, if things are that bad with your current CPU, the upgrades are faster, but they're not 100x faster. What I'm getting at, is that if your current CPU achieves 2 fps, even if the new one is twice the speed, that's only 4 fps :o
