Upgrade from S3, pointless?

Never thought I'd say this, but I'm thinking of not taking an upgrade/contract renewal imminent..

I have an S3 and there are no 'high end' phones on the market that really make me want them.

Anyone gone sim only? I'm on 3 one plan and need to retain unlimited data plus a low/mid range call/text package, so I'm thinking of just keeping my phone and getting a cheaper contract.

I quite fancy the HTC M8 but the monthly cost is not reasonable for what I need.

I'm interested to see others thoughts.

Yep, kept my Note II, which I still love, and went sim only with Virgin (EE) @ £10 per month for 250 mins and 1GB.

If you're happy with your phone, go sim only and wait for a phone you really want. You'll save a fortune.

Yeh, I think I might keep the phone for another 12 months, it seems the market has become stagnant :(

Current prices on 3 website for the M8 are silly, plus they want a £50 up front fee... who do they think they are, apple? lol;)

I too have the S3 myself and I am due an upgrade on the 22nd of this month.

I hate my phone but that's also partly due to the fact I have a 2 pixel wide line running down the centre, top to bottom.

I have been researching phones solidly for 2 weeks now. I have had a long convo with HTCs rep up here in Scotland when he was in a Three store in Glasgow Braehead but the price plus the camera puts me off.

I decided I do not want a Samsung plastic junk phone again, which really only leaves the Z2. Ideally I wished I could wait till June for the G3 but I am impatient and this pixelated line is doing my head in.

The way I am viewing it, is that all the manufacturers have played it safe this year. Choosing a new phone this year is as much fun as choosing a new Energy supplier!.

Was nearly set on getting the M8 but I didn't even know about the G3 until now. Thanks, another phone to look at :o :p

Assuming HTC gain a degree of common sense, my next phone will almost certainly be the M9. The M8 looks tempting, but the Nexus 5 is easily good enough to last me this year (just the shocking speaker positioning which fails it, where the HTCs obviously excel), so I'll wait until this point next year.

The Z2 looks very good on paper, but the size of it, plus the sharp corners puts me off (the similarly-sized M8 looks far better with it's more pocket-friendly rounded approach) - and I still have zero faith in long-term support from Sony.

I thought HTC had lit the blue-touch paper with the M7 and am rather disappointed other manufacturers didn't sit up and take notice of some of the more inspiring bits (namely those speakers, and certainly the theory behind the camera, if not the implementation).

im not jumping on the new phones and am on sim only with 3

im actually on PAYG and pay 15/m for 300mins 3000 texts and unlimited inet

i feel many people are in the same boat of not needing a new phone and finiding 40pm unjustifiable for little gain over say 15-20pm 'keep your phone' ideas

im sticking to my 600 - 700/24 total cost of ownership

after the novelty of it all (android) wore off i decided i didnt really need a better phone so when my contract ended i switched to sim only which was pretty much the same deal but half the price.. and only 12 month to boot! (doubt you could find 12 month now :( ) now thats ended its on a 1 month roller :D

im reluctant to change to anything else now as they all seem to be 24 month contracts

I'll be changing as soon as there's something I want. So far none of the new handsets are what I deem worthy tbh.

Up until last week id had an s3 since release day, bought a nexus 5 last week and never have I been so happy with a purchase.

But put it lightly the S3 is really just a bloated P.O.S
Also there's no real trade-offs for me, the nexus is the same size and the screen is twice the resolution, Its so much faster I cant really say it in any other way than I am totally unaccustomed to any "wait" now when opening apps or doing anything really...

Basically, I would NOT go back. No chance.

Also for me I highly doubt I will purchase another android phone that is not stock andriod

The Nexus 5 is a great phone but far from perfect IMO.

My S3 LTE version with 2GB RAM, 3000mAh (Official) and custom ROM still holds it's own. 2013+2014 have seen a very incremental upgrade which is fine in the performance dept, but there hasn't been a phone that ties in all the best design and features for me to upgrade.

Im in the same situation, currently have a HTC One X running Cyanogenmod to keep it ticking along. Cant really see any top end phones I like but as my monthly bill is £21 and I would like to keep it around that Ill probably end up getting something mid range thats been out for a while and flashing a custom ROM. Phones hit the point of spec war a while ago now and theres nothing thats a really killer feature for me that makes me want to shell out £40+ a month to get a phone that does exactly what my current one does.

Id have kept my S3 if the screen hadn't started playing up tbh. Would probably have rooted it by now to free up some performance.

Still a great phone imo, the S4 seems to be the pinnacle imo just before samsung went totally bat**** crazy with their "S Health" crap.

Whats the ups and downs of a nexus 5? Its one of the few on my list after finding out my upgrade is due on 9th April, oops

For me the 2 main negatives are the poor viewing angles on the screen and colours don't really pop or have great native contrast either. An OLED screen would have been ideal.

Secondly, no expandable storage...32GB Max. I have a 128GB SD card in my S3 full of music, pics + vids and backups.

The battery could have been bigger and the speaker a little better too.

+ve'S are nice clean design, stock android, fast updates, fast hardware and decent camera.

I was looking at upgrading my phone as I can do so if I pay the early upgrade fee to my provider. However the only phone I really want they don't do, secondly every phone store seems to want to stick you on an any time upgrade plan, and thirdly I'm more than happy with my rooted custom rom Galaxy S2.

The only reason I want to change really is because my Mrs has a useless Nokia Lumia 610 and I've promised her my S2, but I'm thinking going Sim only and buying her an S2 on the second hand market.

All networks seem very keen to stuff you on 4G too which is something I don't really need that and coverage for 4G is useless.

personally thought the s3 camera was better then the nexus 5, batterys on par.. nexus 5 is fast but the s3 is fast enough for everyday things.. im not upgrading until they bring out batteries that last a lot longer then they do these days.

it really is slim pickings for me in what Im looking to spend. So far theres HTC One Max, Nexus 5, Moto X or LG G2 unless anyone has any other suggestions.
