Ok so i'm going to update my pc and i'm thinking I may aswell replace the monitor at the same time, as my current samsung has a few marks on the screen now.

The samsung 2443BW is a great monitor and I love the 1920x1200 resolution of it (which seems to be a thing of the past now), but I feel that it's time to go for a 27".

I'm not overly fussed about 3D tbh, and the pc is mainly used for surfing the web, watching movies etc etc.

It's rare that I play games on the PC but there is the odd occasion.

So are there any recommendations on what to go for, without breaking the bank ?

I have also thought about going for a 27" or even 32" tv to use as a pc monitor, but not sure it's the right way to go ???

Hi there,

May I ask what rough budget you are looking at?

If you are looking for a good large monitor then the 27in 2560x1440 resolution IPS panel models from Dell, HP, Samsung and Hazro are worth looking at. Prices of these start at ~£400.

The massive resolution means you have a lot of on-screen real estate - ideal for running windows side-by-side or looking through widescreen-enabled websites in their full glory.

For full-screen video watching the pixels don't match perfectly with a 1080p video source, but tbh the pixels are so small the GPU scaling is so good then I doubt you would see a difference in image quality with a 1440p screen and a 1080p screen using the same panel technology.

For gaming on one of these monitors, the extra resolution makes the games look fantastic (the high pixel density and IPS panel also help a lot), though the trade-off is that it greatly increase the demand on the graphics card - so expect lower framerates in games compared to a 1920x1200 monitor.

My budget was around £300 for a monitor, as I am upgrading the rest of the pc at the same time, but that isn't a fixed budget.

Going for a TV as your main display usually isn't a good idea. There are only a few models that are good for it (should be plenty of topics here with the disadvantages).
If you're going for a 1920x1080 27" you'd actually end up going a step down on the resolution ladder, the only monitors with the same resolution are ridiculously expensive (aimed at the photo-editting market) and/or EOL.
So going for a 2560x1440 would be recommended if possible, it will a heavy burden for your video card however.

If you want to stick to at least your current resolution then there is the Hanns.G HZ281HPB but I do think it's been declared EOL and with only 4 in stock you might have to act fast ;)

Hey!

For that sort of price, something like this perhaps?

Dell make great panels :)

If I were to go for the U2711, is it going to work ok with my gtx560ti ?

Also if I were to view a 1080p source, will it be displayed correctly ?

yeah, that will be fine with your GTX560Ti, it's high res so you won't be able to play at the best settings on games, but it'll still run.

Yes, it has 1:1 pixel mapping, so you can have black bars on the screen and have it at 1080p, you can stretch it to the full size of the screen, or keep the aspect ratio and have it as big as possible.

A very good monitor, and a great resolution!

Ok has anyone gone from a 2443bw to a U2711 and if so, is this AG thing that everyone goes on about with the Dell very noticable ?

I have a 2443bw and was considering the u2711 but went for the Hazro HZ27WD in the end. The 2443bw (or at least mine) is a horrible monitor, already disliked it the day I got it due to my much older Samsung 206bw having much better gray/white contrast.

Picked the Hazro over the Dell due to the AG coating on the Dell, the sparkly whites get on my nerves, doesn't help that a lot of sites have a white background. I haven't seen the u2711 aside from in a store so I haven't had it side by side with my 2443bw but I do know the Dell coating is (much) worse.

Right I already find on white backrounds that the 2443bw seems a little grainy, so now i'm thinking the U2711 isn't going to be the monitor for me, especially if the pics on this link http://www.anandtech.com/Gallery/Album/568#5 are even remotely close to what the screen is like when it's 2ft in front of you.

Also i'm not sure Hazro is a brand I want to deal with (heard there quality control and customer service isn't great).

So is there anything else around the price of a U2711, thats 27" and a damn good display ?

That's just what an LCD monitor looks like through a digital camera. Try it yourself by taking a photo of your current monitor with a camera/mobile phone.

Ahh fair point, didn't think of that.

However after reading some reviews, they all seem to say due to the resolution of the screen the pixels are tiny and therefore in it's native resolution, it can be hard to read text.

As I mainly use to surf the web, and as it also has the agreesive AG making "speckle" effects I am still unsure about spending £550 - £600 on a monitor that might not suit me.

So are there any other 27" screens I should give some consideration to, before I take the plunge ?

Well the alternative at 27" is 1920x1200 like the Hanns.G monitor I mentioned before. Or moving down the resolution ladder to 1920x1080.

Text on websites is quite fine for me @ 2560x1440/27", on some interface elements in the browser it does get a little small like the text on the tabs in Firefox, or in the browsers own search field.
The Hazro's are the only AG-free monitors on the market (aside from the Mac Cinema display but those are waaaaay out of your budget). The only monitor with a much lighter coating than the Dell is the Samsung S27A850D.

I did find the S27A850D earlier on a google search, looks nice, but seems to have it's own issue's (being new tech).

The ACD looks nice, but paying apple tax on an phone is enough I think, don't want to be paying it for a monitor too lol plus there is the extra agro of getting it to work with my 560ti as it doesn't have mini display port (or even display port).

The annoying thing is, I don't know of anywhere locally that stocks any half decent monitors, so it's not like I can go and have a good look at the screens to help me decide.
