Hi guys, looking to upgrade my router.

I currently have a LinkSYS WRT54GS router, but I think its dying. I have a fine connection over wireless one minute, then a short time later websites begin to stop loading etc. This is resolved by disconnecting and reconnected to the router.

Looking for a new router, which preferably is Linksys also... I have heard not to touch anything with Belkin written on it going by search history lol.

Cable, not ADSL.

Cheers

I would suggest loading Tomato or DD-WRT onto the router and see what happens. Also try changing the wireless channel, might be a neighbour has decided to set up on the same frequency.

Or the WRT160N if you want something cheap.

I had the WRT160N wireless dropped a lot with both Linksys & DD-WRT firmware, had it for around 6 months. The longest the wireless stayed on without dropping was 2 months. Lots of bad reviews saying it is a common prob. for the wireless to drop. Might be a heating issue, not sure.

Thanks for the replies.

Looking into getting the Linksys WRT610N.

Because this is a Gigabit router, will it still allow me to use it at standard speed also? As I have ran Cat5e around the house to multiple rooms, but with only 2 pairs terminated into the Cat5e faceplates, as I used the other 2 pairs for telephone. I read somewhere that it requires all 4 pairs to run gigabit. But will it work for normal speed over Ethernet when I have plugged the cables into the Gigabit ports on the router?

Your initial issue.
Are you on VM?
I just ask as over the past 7 days I have had 10 episodes of http traffic failing. My connection is still maintained, man yahoo mumble and mmos continue to run fine as does email, but any http resolution fails uttterly.
Rebooting the router rather than cable modem has sorted it. this affected both wired eternet computers simultaneuosly, and also the wireless connection.
As it is seemingly random, and oddly hasn;t occurred today, i wodnered if my router was on the way out.
This is the third thread with similar symptoms in a few days, just wondering if it could be something other than the router?

Ahh yes, I'm on VM.

Going to have a Google about that issue now. Glad someone pointed it out before I purchased it incase it is a very common problem!

Are you running the Default Linksys firmware, or DD-WRT?

Cheers

Purchased a Linksys WRT610-N Router.

I will post back once received. Looking forward to flashing it with DDWRT and having a play with the settings.

Cheers
