At the moment ive got a X2 3800 running at 2.8ghz and DFI ultra-D board. Would it be worth selling them on ebay or something and going to a cheap intel system?
If you are planning to overclock the **** out of it then it's worth the upgrade. I moved from X2 3800+ 2.6Ghz to E4300 3.1Ghz and I've not looked back.
But if all you want is game then money is better spent on a high end graphics.
I went from an X2 3800+, 1GB gskill PC4400, and SLI'd 7800GT's to the spec in my sig (2GB at time of upgrade) and the difference was like night and day (and mine was a "cheap" intel rig)
I'm pretty much in the same boat as you, i got an 8800GTS 320 and there isnt any game that it cant run with decent graphics. Im going to hold off an upgrade untill we start to see motherboards with PCi-e 2.0 coming out as this would not leave you behind with all the new cards.
