Hi, this is a newbie questions and I apologise, but I am finding it hard to figure out the performance of the new generation cards (x1800 & 7800)

As it is, in Call of Duty 2 at 1280x1024 I have to run with most of the textures/effects/AA & AF off or on very low with the current card.

If I bought a 7800GT would I be able to crank up the AA/AF and detail in games such as COD2 to near maximum?

I have 2.5Ghz Opteron 144 // 2gb Corsair Ram to put with it, I would also need an ASUS A8N Premium for the PCI-E.

Would this be a decent upgrade (other option is a new samsung 930BF TFT)

Of the cards for sale...
Faster to slower (top to bottom)
X1800XT
7800GTX
7800GT / X1800XL
X850XT PE / X800XT PE

If your finding things slowing down with the X800XT PE then i would go for the X1800XT over the slower 7800GT (or 7800GTX). This will get you a decent improvement over your current card.

Can i ask why you have set everything to low. I have the same card and i have got everything on high except i have got aa on x2 and 2x af, i get 35fps average in COD2

in the later levels with all the men and smoke on screen FPS drops too low for me :( stutters quite a lot in fact when theres a lot of action.

I'll have a play around with it, see if I can increase the level of detail see how that fairs.

google for cod2 tweak guide, it works. ;)

had a look through :) was a good guide, but i've got most of the system tweaks already done and the COD2 tweaks didnt help - I am sure the problem is elsewhere.

As it is I am currently looking at buying an x1800XT, Asus A8n-E and a new PSU. But I might need a new HDD :(

Maybe he needs higher FPS than you? (Not a dig, just a comment!). I personally couldn't play a game @ 35fps average.

Anyway, Vader, I am in a similar position (X850XT) and I'll be getting the X1800XT after (I'm hoping) some price drops when the X1900 comes out.

The X1800XT is 2nd only to the 7800GTX 512MB in games, but the price jump for that 7800 isn't worth it. It's faster than the 7800GTX 256 though.

Ahh thanks for the post Jimbo Mahoney, I've been getting itchy to buy a new gfx card, but I think I shall do what you are doing and wait till after the x1900 release and have a look at the prices then :)

just reading this and am also in the same position - my x800 xt is struggling at 1920x1200 on source and cod2, well not to good at 1920x1200 ;)

i am waiting to see the x1900 but if it is rediculously expensive i like the the look of the x1800xt - should keep me going until dx10 ;)

Itchy - me too!

I run a 22" CRT and would love to play all my games @ 1600 x 1200, but being one of those high FPS types, I need 60 fps minimum, so often I find myself @ 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 960.

The X1800XT should be pretty sweet, especially if it nudges £300...

Oh it would be brilliant if it nudges £300 I'm a little over my budget with the x1800XT, the new NF4 mobo and PSU atm.

I need a new TFT as well though unfortunately, this one is on it's last legs with annoying screenburn and poor quality nowadays.

come tomorrow depending on the performance of the x1900 i think i might be a proud x1800xt owner with that deal

glad i could help though ;)

I'm tempted now hehe - thats an awesome price!!!

Oh, please let me have lost my credit card ........... oh no, there it is :( looking at me longingly ... suggestively :( arghhh

i am still in indecision-ville - to get a x1800xt today and maybe disappointed tomorrow, or "waste" some cash and have the information on the 1900xt tomorrow

damn you gibbo!!!
