Upgrade from X800GTO (AGP)

Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade my AGP graphics card from an X800GTO, the main reason being that I'm trying to play World in Conflict and the frame rates are pretty poor no matter what I do. I suspect that other games in the future will probably be the same. The price of progress I guess.

So, I'm looking at an X1950Pro which seems to be good value and I don't want to spend too much on an AGP system. My processor is an Athlon XP4200 with 1GB RAM.

Does anyone know if this would be a good upgrade or would the improvement not be that great given the other components in my setup?

Thanks,
Jim

I went from the X800XT PE (AGP) to 7600GT OC (PCI-E) but switched back to ATI 3 weeks later as the 7600 didn't have the raw power of the x800. I then got a X1900XT and it was a great improvement for me, especially in Call of Duty 2 as I was playing the single player at the time. The x1900 was much faster and running the game in DX9 how it should be as the X800 struggles.

I can play World in Conflict at 1600x1200 with high graphics options selected. I've yet to try Very High again as I was having to end a lot of processes in task manager to get it running smooth so I backed down to the second highest option. The downside to having 1gb :(. I have another 1gb (2x512mb) but my motherboard is touchy for RAM. It's also Corsair and G.Skill but hopefully I can get it working before I upgrade as it would help in games.

Even so. It's very playable with 1gb and looks great at the specs above so I hope the X1950Pro won't be too far behind :).

Is your CPU an X2 4200?.

Thanks for the info. My CPU is an X2 4200, a typo in my original mail.

I didn't seem to have too many problems with Call of Duty 2. It's mainly just World in Conflict and Oblivion that are the problem games. Looks like the X1950Pro would keep my system relatively current for that little bit longer.

No problem :).

Did you run Call of Duty in DX9 mode on the X800?. I was running that on older drivers and on a single cored 3700+ @ 2.7Ghz so it might have changed a lot with drivers and also dependant on when we were both playing the game. It didn't run well for me in DX9 mode but the X1900 made it run like melted butter.

I went from the 9800pro 128mb to the X800 and it was about double. The jump from the X800 to the X1900XT was about double too. The X1950Pro is a little bit toned down in comparison with my card with less pixel shaders but I'd still say from 75% of an improvement you will see (also dependant on the game).

It would be a pretty big upgrade & certainly worthwhile.
The X1950pro is the fastest AGP card you can easily get a hold off.
I say go for it.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice and info. Looks like I'll be ordering an X1950Pro - looking forward to playing WiC as it was intended.

J.D - I was running COD2 in DX9 but only in 1024 x 768. I'd probably got a couple of other things turned down as choppiness leads to an almost instant demise in a game like that.

Have fun with your new card :). End as many processes in task manager as you can before playing World in Conflict as the more free ram the better. Especially at 1gb like me.

As for CoD. I ran it full with AA and AF @ 1280x1024 with my x800 but it was too choppy so I reverted back to DX7 mode until the X1900 landed in my system. You're like me in that respect. Playability over eye candy ;).
