Had this card for about a year and haven't been keeping much of an eye on gfx card developments since. Will prolly be getting a 20" WS TFT at some point and thinking I could do with a more powerful card.

What could I get for ~£150 (PCI-E), quite likely 2nd hand, that would be a worthy upgrade? Much benefit in going for something with 512MB of RAM? Do either of the latest generation of cards ATI X1x00 or NV 7x00 run cooler than the other? Anything else I should be looking out for?

Much appreciated :)

I'd look at the X1800XT 256MB. Would offer a fair increase in terms of performance from an X800. Only about £170 at the moment and at that price, a cracking buy .

Cool :) Had glanced at the X1800XT and thought it looked like a good buy. Will keep an eye out for one.

Anyone any thoughts on whether its worthwhile going for the 512MB version?

I would personally say no, the 256MB version is still a very good buy. Offers great performance for a great price .

Actually, Considering the fact that you will be getting a 20" widescreen tft in the future, it might be a good idea to go for the 512mb version as the extra ram helps with bigger resolution:)

My Asus X800xt pe AGP had a problem and I had to rma it (broken fan blade). :(

Imagine my excitement when I got offered a Connect3d X1800XT 256mb to replace it!

I just had to go out and buy A DFI NF4 Ultra-D (the last one on OCUK,apparently :p) oh, and a 20" Philips widescreen! :D

All is good

I did hear something about the extra ram making a difference in oblivion, dunno if it's true though, just a comment I read.

I know, but it could be a pointer to performance in future games, it does use lots of pixel shaders afterall. I've also seen the 512 mb version for £175 last week (don't ask me where anyone, the rules don't allow me to say and they're out of stock ATM anyway), so if you can get one at that price it's an easy decision.

i just upgraded to an x1800xt 512 from a r800gto and am getting just over double 3d2003 scores .i.e 18,000 as against 8000

now i play ddo with everthing on max and it looks great and no graphics slowdowns .the r800gto just couidnt hack it at max settings.

very pleased.well worth the £200 and ill get £50 or so for my gto at online auction.

As said above; The X1800XT 256MB is an excellent buy right now, and with a 20" TFT you will not notice any difference at all between the 256MB model and the 512MB model (sometimes the 256MB model will even come out slightly on top due to overhead.)

System RAM is much more important than video memory at the moment, and benchmarks show that 512MB makes no difference in pretty much any game, in any resolution, regardless of antialiasing/anisotropic filtering, even on mainstream systems, so long as there isn't a huge bottleneck elsewhere. :)
