Worthwhile?

I play 1280x1024, I do get a few FPS drops here and there which is a tad annoying. Would have thought the 256MB version would be ideal. I'm not totally convinced in the necessity in 512MB just yet.

When I upgrade to this, the system will be a 4400+ w/. 2GB RAM, 540W PSU.

p.s. Just noticed a X1900XT for only £210 inc VAT on this week only. Thats cheaper than what my X850T was at the time i bought it. A good buy?

Definately worthwhile, went from an x800 XT PE to x1800 XT at that res, and the x800 XT PE ws blown away, the performance increase is incredible, plays everthing fine maxed out no sweat. :)

512mb doesn't really make a differance either.

I went from an X800 GTO² running faster than X850 XT PE clocks with 16 pipelines unlocked to a Sapphire X1800 XT 256MB, and I couldn't believe the difference. You will be blown away, in fact I am surprised LoadsaMoney didn't mention that you should add a new pair of trousers to that order, because it's true. :D

Sounds very reassuring! :)

So is the extra £60 for a X1900XT not really worth it then?

That depends. If your budget allows for it, then go for it. I broke my X1800 XT (entirely my fault, not a problem with the card) so I have opted to buy an X1900 XT to replace it, looking forward to a big performance increase. :)

My budget will stretch, but considering the resolution, would I be better off saving the cash and upgrading my CPU instead?

Ah, forgot about your resolution. An X1800 XT will handle that easily, and I mean without breaking a sweat it will max out most games (I had Oblivion running with all the eye candy and HDR+AA on mine at that res.)

Would be a very good idea to put that extra savings elsewhere, is Core 2 Duo an option? :)

I've only just bought a new 939 motherboard like 3 months ago. I have a 3800 single core as well, I wouldn't really get that much for that as well as my X850XT.

It would be practically a new build considering I need a new PSU as well. I was thinking of just upgrading from 3800 to a 4400+, overclock it a bit, then do a bigger upgrade to whatever is new and good next year. I'm not convinced the Core 2 Duo would give me that much of a performance boost for the amount its gna cost me.

Aye, Socket 939 has a lot of life left in it despite being axed so don't worry about the Core 2 thing as I was just kidding. An X2 4400+ should go a long way, especially OCed and with an X1800 XT. :D

Yeah a 4400+ will last a good while yet, and as said x1800 handles 1280x1024 easily, also played Oblivion here maxed out with 2xAA/16xAF and HDR on, and ive only got a 3500+ all stock. :)

Just to let you know ive just updated from x800xt AGP (oc'd) to X1900xt PCI-E (non oc'd) and its incredible. I was playing COD2 at 1280 res on the Xt800 and getting really bad stuttering and sub 9 fps with all the eye candy on.

I now get 50+ fps with stunningly smooth play and am over the moon at the upgrade

Hope this helps

Deks

Good idea in my opinion too.
With the X1800XT you should be sweet.

I'm going on the fact that P4s are certainly not obsolete. So I shouldn't think that something like Dual Cores aren't going to die out over night. I'm not even too fussed by overclocking it, I'm just used to my 3800 single core running at 2.4Ghz, I don't even think I'll notice much of a difference with a 2.2Ghz Dual Core.

By this time next year It'll be time to upgrade again I'm sure. I'm guna be ordering it in the next few days before the stocks run out cos iirc they aren't making them anymore?

Am I right in thinking that 512MB is a waste of my money atm? Considering what I play on. I don't even play Oblivion and Fear, mainly Steam based, without HDR on, and a bit of BF2.

512MB VRAM really doesn't have any advantage over 256MB VRAM right now.

If you don't think you would see a huge increase in upgrading your CPU by the way then I would recommend keeping the one you have. 3800+ is still a powerhouse in most situations, I was using an OCed 3400+ with my X1800XT.
