considering a new gfx, what would your thoughts be on the battle between ATI and Nvidia?

got about 300quid to spent in total, and the 295 looks very nice a lil pricey tho. I have also been looking at a 4980, but becoming very tempted by the 4870x2

what would u guys recommend?

What resolution do you use? and are you planning on upgrading this (IE monitor) in the future? For NVidia your best performance in that price range would be the 285, they come in around £300, alternatively either the 4890 or 4870x2 as you mentioned before. but as I say whats your resolution?

A stock Q6600 will bottleneck either of those cards (X2&295), go look at how they scale with clockspeed. It'll still be fast, but you wouldn't be driving the cards to their maximum performance. Not sure if it would bottleneck a GTX285 though.

Silly of me, not updated me sig in awhile my q6600 running at 3.2 atm. As for resolutions I'm currently running dual 19" tft's @ 1440x900. However am considering getting a 24" as things get a bit cramped when working on photoshop. Not quite sure if this would benifit me tho

Happy speaks the truth.

Do you run games on both 19'' screens at once? Or do you just use one? If you're going to stay at 1440x900 don't bother upgrading, as a faster card won't bring you a lot of benefit. At 24'' though, anything upward of a GTX260 will do you fine....in fact, even the 9800GTX should perform fairly well at that resolution :)

just use the 1 monitor to game on, games like cod4 wont let me use both, coz apparently i'll have to greater viewing area or summit like that, from what im told. PB realted.

would it be worth me upgrading the card to say a 4890, would i notice the difference when gaming, as well as on normal day to day use?

Just get a 4870 1gb, its only about 4 frames or so slower than the 4890, but around £50 less, 4890's are not worth it. :)

Im surprised the 9800 can't handle that res though, should eat it.

oh its fine, im just trying to plan ahead and attempt to future proof some hardware. My 9800 is fine atm, just over the nxt few months new games like cod modern warefare 2 meant to be coming out. + new monitor. I thought the 9800gtx mite start to struggle.

If youre thinking of getting a 24" monitor soon then yeah go for it, with your mobo Id recomend the ATI route, get one good card now, then you could another later if needed. the 4890 is the best single card and is only £35 (not £50 barring TWO offers) more than a 4870, imo you should get one of these
