Well im still using XP pro 32bit, as i didnt want to move to Vista as there were so many problems with it before.

Now im thinking about buying a new OS hard drive so that would mean a new install - normally i would just put xp pro on, but im thinkin maybe its better to just install vista/ windows 7?

Is it a lot better? If so, which?

also currently on 2gb ram and thinking about going to 4gb, so would be installing 64bit version

If you have the opportunity and willingness to move to a new OS, then go for it. I would hold out for Windows 7 given it is on course for release late this year/early next year.

Is it a lot better? Objectively, yes, Vista/Windows 7 is a far more advanced OS than XP but many people have a few gripes with Vista, particularly the new security model. There are lots of XP vs Vista arguments, a quick google will give you plenty of reading material.

Sorry but I cant stand Vista, but thats an opinion only! But I would rather stick with my xp pro 64 even with the compatibility issues, I love it and most of the compatilbility probs can be worked around!

That's what I'm gonna do, get Windows 7, I'm on XP Pro, don't much see the point in upgrading to vista myself, not because I don't like it but if I'm gonna upgrade may aswell be to 7.

If you gonna buy another hdd, may be a good idea to get the Windows 7 beta thats floating around, atleast then you can try it, unless thats what you meant?

I wouldn't bother buying Vista now - not because it's bad, but because it's a waste of money with 7 coming out so soon. I'd either stick with XP until 7 comes out, or else get hold of the latest beta of 7 which will see you through until 7 is released. (Nothing particularly wrong with Vista any more, but from the betas 7 seems to be much better and back to XP's level of performance on slower systems.)
