I've been asking questions in CPU threads, GPU threads and almost made a thread in the MoBo section there... but it would probably be better getting the entire discussion in this section IMO. So here goes!

I almost pulled the trigger on a 4790k as an upgrade to my 4670k. Reason being, I've went 970 SLI and I feel the i5 is restricting the GPU's at times. I also fancy upgrading to i7 as I do a bit of video encoding from time to time.

Now I'm wondering whether I should do a "proper" upgrade and go x99. I've picked out some parts and would like some discussion before going for it.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel 5820K 3.30GHz (Haswell-E) Socket LGA2011-V3 Processor - Retail (BX80648I75820K) £311.99
1 x Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C14 2400MHz Quad Channel Kit - Black (CMK16GX4M4A2400C14) £229.99
1 x Gigabyte X99-Gaming 5 Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR4 ATX Motherboard £199.99
Total : £751.57 (includes shipping : £8.00).

1. Will this MoBo and CPU run the 970's at x16 or x8 if I place them in slots 1 and 3? There's a bit of info on the MoBo spec details, but I want to be sure. I need slot 2 sitting empty between the 2 cards so that my temperatures are acceptable on the cards.

2. Is Z87 to X99 a worthwhile upgrade, considering the CPU shift and also the shift from DDR3 to DDR4? I can sell my current MoBo, RAM and CPU so the cost is softened a little. But maybe I'd be better waiting for Intel's next release, and possibly going for the 4790k in the meantime?

3. Is Haswell-E better than Haswell and DC in terms of temperature for overclocking?

It's a bit of an outlay to do this upgrade, and I'd like some decent advice beforehand if you don't mind! Really appreciate any advice offered.

Thanks.

I wonder if you shouldn't wait.

As broadwell is due this year.

The 4770k or 4790K will be so much cheaper now and go into your current motherboard.

8X/8X vs 16X/16X isnt the biggest difference in the world either, its a few % between them.

Edit, having looked at the board its 16X/8X/16X/8X for the four slots respectively from top to bottom.

If you just game, don't go for the 5820k. The likelihood is that the 4790k will not only be a cheaper option, but faster due to the sheer clock speed in more single threaded games. Just stick to your original guns and go for the 4790k, the X99 isn't worth it unless you want the feeling of power over other people :p

Could you not wait until something like Broadwell comes out?

Thanks for the advice, guys. Pretty clear what the verdict is!

I'll invest in the 4790k as it's a £150 cost after selling the 4670k. I'll then hang out for Broadwell and see what that has to offer.
