Mate has a 7800gtx gfx card in a Abit KN8 SLi mobo with a operon 146 @ 2.8GHz and 2Gb of RAM running on Vista 32bit.

He wants to improve gaming performance on his 19" monitor (1280x1080). Could you buy a PCI-express 2.0 gfx card for this PCI-express 1.0 mobo and get bang for buck? Also how much would he have to pay to get a resonable increase in performance on his current system?

Probably think about getting some more memory but thats a different topic...

tbh if his mobo only supports pci-e 1.0 then any newer card he gets (pci-e 2.0) the performance will be appaling (well, half really), plus his cpu could well be a bottleneck. I would suggest a new mobo and cpu. I'm sure someone with more technical knowledge will be along later.

I think he means PCI-E x16 1.0 and 2.0 in which case there should be negligible performance hit when upgrading. I think a 5770 would be good boost definitely the best mid range card atm. If not then a 4870 would be cheaper and slightly faster(than 5770) but needs more power and outputs more heat.

He could pick up a secondhand 8800gtx for about £45 and that would give him a great performance boost, plus DX10 support ;)

What is your friends budget?

I'd agree with an 8800gtx to be honest, especially considering the rest of the systems specs, cards with much more power probably won't get utilized properly with the pci 1.0 and cpu bottlenecking being potential factors.

Can't cry at a sub £50 upgrade though =D

4850 is probably a better upgrade, uses less power and is cooler. Should be able to get one for about £50 second hand.

Yeh, thought about this again last night after I'd left the post and was thinking about a 8800gt or gtx. They're going for about £60 on auction sites.

The mobo supports ATI cards but just cant do crossfire. Is that right?

Cheers
