Upgrade graphics card or go with ps5?

So my son has some Christmas money burning a hole in his pocket. £400 collected from birthday and Xmas.

His current pc is -
Aorus x470 ultra
Ryzen 7 1700x
16gb ddr4 2400mhz
Psu 600 watts
2x Radeon rx560 4gb gddr5

He’s looking to upgrade his graphics card, maybe to a rtx 2060 super, or maybe a 3060ti. Would the cpu be a bottleneck on either of these graphics cards? Or, would a ps5 actually perform better for gaming? Cheers for any help.

If he'll be happy with a ps5 then get one since they're cheaper and are better suited for games.

I'd only recommend pc gaming for people with specific requirements that a console can't accommodate. I game on a pc because a console simply doesn't fit my needs. They're cheaper but they can't physically do what I need.

Cheers for the replies. He’s really into his pc gaming. He also likes to stream and edit videos. I’ve said the ps5 would be a much better bang for his buck investment purely for gaming...especially if he might need to upgrade his cpu to accommodate a 3060ti. Just more expense.

Dunno why people are giving you such bad advice but he already has a fairly decent PC besides the GPU. A PS5 is either slightly below a 2060 Super when using Ray tracing, or closer to a 2070 Super when not using it. So if he can catch a 3060 Ti for MSRP that would set him up for a better than console GPU for the whole generation AND all the other great perks of a PC. Just make sure that the PSU is actually a decent quality one.

Upgrade the GPU, it's not even a close decision.

Brilliant. Thanks for the advice. I’ll ask him what make his psu is. He’s pretty much dead set on a new graphics card and you’ve answered the question on performance between upgrading the graphics card and ps5. Cheers.

No doubt the PS5 is both : better value for money, and will have much greater longevity. It will also perform better. I can’t remember 100% but sure it supports a mouse and keyboard in some games?

Yes only some games though. That's why I'm a PC gamer. PC gaming is more expensive but that's irrelevant. Usability is priority for me and a console isn't usable without 100% keyboard/mouse compatibility.

I'd pay twice the price for that usability.

PC gamers have their own niche which is why they chose the expensive platform in the first place. For me it's keyboard/mouse. For some its high refresh gaming. For others it's streaming etc.

If you don't have a niche requirement then pc gaming isn't for you.

The OP's son streams pc games so that's his niche for needing a pc. A 3060 ti is the answer or wait for a 3060.

My niche is RTS/city builders that sort of thing. Games like Anno 1800 and Total war.

and those developers are missing out by not porting the games to consoles - these consoles do support mouse and keyboard, the developer just needs to implement it
They’ve done Planet Coaster on PS5, but it’s not really the type of game for kick back sofa gaming is it?

Plus the modding could never be done to the extent it is on PC.

I would get the PS5 on a strict budget, just recently I had a 3060ti on an r5 2600 and it was a decent bottleneck in most games at 1440p. Most CPU heavy game I have which is cyberpunk was basically unplayable due to the CPU capping out long before the GPU causing awful stuttering.

You could sell the 1700 and 560s and put that cash towards an r5 3600 that would do the job nicely with a 3060ti.

You should also consider the cost of games for PC vs console. Games can be acquired considerably cheaper for PC even for brand new titles if you shop around. When you consider the amount of giveaways and bundles for PC games the difference in cost really is considerable. I have over 1000 games and my average cost per game is less than £15.

This is starting to be less and less the case unfortunately

I'm frequently seeing so called sales on pc, like the current steam winter sale offering games at console prices - I no longer see the large 70% discounts on AAA games

sometimes it's even worse, I bought Ac Valhalla and watch dogs legion from epic yesterday cause it's on sale at 30% discount and a few hours later I saw they're on 50% discount on psn for the ps5, so that annoyed me

If you are willing to use a VPN and/or buy from foreign stores, lots of bargains on all systems.

I use Epic Games Argentina as my main PC game buying store along with Xbox games from Brazil and Turkey using gift cards.

I find Sony's setup a little more complicated but it can be done too.....

I had a similar predicament to the OP but ended up getting a Series X. My PC is an R5 1600 with a GTX 1080. I have Gamepass Ultimate.

Many thanks, mate. He has actually asked about selling his cpu and gpus to put towards new hardware. I did think the current cpu might be a bottleneck.
