Hi all. Current system in sig. Bought all the stuff from here in 2007 and self built.
Its been a great machine, but has stood dormant for nearly 3 years due to me becoming a father, getting married, and moving house.
You have no idea how precious time is until you don`t have any spare !!

I`m looking to bring myself up to date, as a recent boot up of said machine showed its age.
I considered getting a cheap 775 quad and a better gfx card, but DDR2 seems silly money and hard to find.

After reading many posts on here, there are different opinions. Skylake/Haswell etc.
I would like to go Skylake, but I am open to other suggestions.
I am aware no system is future proof, but I want it to last a good few years.
Budget is £400-£500

It will be used for light to mid-range gaming. Encoding DVD`s to childrens tablets and general stuff.
I am thinking that I can use my existing case, power supply and possibly even my cooler with a mounting kit.

I had in mind the following:

Decent Z170 Board (the "lesser" Skylake board savings seem minimal)
I3 6100 cpu
8gb Ram
250gb SSD

So the 8pack core I3 system is definately on my radar.

The biggest dilemma I have is with the gfx card. Alarmingly, The HD530 on the I3 appears to be at least on a par with my 8800GT.
So Bearing in mind we will only ever game at 1080p, and I don`t mind turning some settings down,
I am thinking either a Nvidia 750ti or 950 would probably suffice. Like the CPU, I can always upgrade later on.

Suggestions welcome :)

i paid £20 for a q6600 the other week(sold the computer now though)and i pay under a tenner for ddr2 unless i need to pay extra..

but if you got a fair bit of change then definitely haswell or skylake, even the haswell i3 processors are great and in some cases, used anyways, ddr3 can be cheaper, but the haswell i3 is not unlocked if overclocks in your nature.

I looked at some of the S775 quads on ebay.
I would still need a decent graphics card and an SSD. Both of which can be re-used in a newer system of course.

The tinkerman in me wants to have a play and wring the neck out of the old system.

Hmmm...

if your power supply is up to the task then you can get a core2quad and a gtx 650ti or a hd 7770 for either £100 or less from a particular 2nd hand shop.

After far to much indecision, I have ordered the 8 Pack core I3 system, A GTX960 and a Samsung SSD.

More than I had originally budgeted, but what the hell. Have not had any new hardware for far too long.

Can`t wait !! :D
