Hello OCUK,

Wondering if anybody has time to offer me some advice?

I'm finding my system is struggling somewhat with certain games and I'm guessing it's time I should look at upgrading slightly.
I'm not bothered about playing games on the absolute max settings, although my resolution is 1920x1080.

I'm typically an MMO/RPG player, I'm currently playing games such as Mass Effect 2 and unfortunately the Rift BETA which is unplayable for me.
My gut instinct is to upgrade the OS and CPU but I think that would involve a new motherboard, I only have around £300-350 to play with.

My current spec:

ASUS M4A78 Pro AMD 780G
HIS ATi Radeon HD 4870 (custom cooler fitted)
Retail Boxed AMD X2 250
Geil PC2-6400 2GB (2X1GB)
Seagate 1.5TB SATA HD (7200rpm)
Windows XP Pro 32bit

I would very much appreciate your help.

Yeah youre best looking at a new CPU and RAM, the 780G is prob OK so its upto you if you want to keep that and get newer DDR2 RAM or just get new board and DDR3 and CPU then sell your old stuff or donate it to family/spare PC what ever

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.20GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £112.79
Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H AMD 880G (Socket AM3) microATX DDR3 Motherboard £60.67
GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz VALUE PLUS Dual Channel (GVP34GB1600C9DC) £38.39
Sub Total : £176.54
Shipping cost assumes delivery to UK Mainland with:
DPD Next Day Parcel
(This can be changed during checkout) Shipping : £9.00
VAT is being charged at 20.00% VAT : £37.11
Total : £222.65

It sprob also worth investing in a copy of windows 7 HP 64bit, thatll bring you in just over 300, the 4870 is still an OK card, especially if its the 1 gig version, keep the rest of what you have for now, you should see quite an imrpovement, then in a year or whenevr you have a bit more cash you can look at a newer gfx card

Thanks a lot for the above, looks spot on and I agree I should upgrade the OS at the sametime. And yes the 4870 is the 1gig model. With the CPU though, I assume as it's retail it will have a cooler included?
