Upgrade help

I have a gaming pc that I built in Dec 08 (with a great deal of advice from this forum - thanks to all again) and need some upgrade advice please.

Spec is as follows:

Case - Antec 300
Mobo - Asus P5Q Pro
Graphics Card - HIS ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB
Memory - GSkill 4Gb DDR2 PC2-8500C5 (2x2Gb)
CPU - Core2 Duo E8400 @3.00GHz
Cooler - Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
PSU - Corsair TX 750W
HDD - Samsung Spinpoint F1 500Gb
Monitor - Acer X222W
Operating system - Vista 64 bit - Windows 7 pro 64 bit arriving later this week

Will windows 7 make a huge difference or do I really need to spend on hardware - I can go up to £300-£400 if necessary.

windows 7 is like a fixed windows vista, it's a lot better
you could overclock your processor somewhat on that board very easily, read some of the guides here for more info,
update your graphics, HD5770 can be had for around the 100 mark, i'm no authority on gfx so, theres prolly better out there for a little more,

what sort of games do you play?
 
Thanks for the replies. I have no preference when it comes to a GPU - I've had both ATI and NVidia in the past. Guess its just a case of researching the numerous 460s that are available. How does the card that you've linked compare generally with the others that are out there?

I haven't overclocked before but will take a look at the guides and give it a go.

As you have 3-400 available Id recomend either the 1gig gigabyte 460 or even a 470, that will give your system a nice boost, and yeah OC your CPU n you should be able to hold off upgrading the cpu/mobo/ram til next year at least, when theres then going to be new generation of sockets out
 
+1 for 460 GTX 1GB card. Best value out there atm. You could consider a secondhand Q6600 (around £60) and overclock it to 3.4/3.6 for quad core.
 
Oh and an SSD like the Crucial 300M (faster read/slow write) or OCZ vertex 2E (not as fast read as the Crucial but much faster Write) would be a nice upgrade and an ideal place for you to install Win 7 on.
